Hall of Fame
Professor Emeritus of Health, Physical Education and Recreation and former Department Chair, Dr. Ernest Rangazas served the school in multiple capacities during his distinguished 29-year career. Before retiring in 1985, Dr. Rangazas spent time coaching baseball and football and working as the athletic director.
In eight years of baseball coaching from 1960-1968, the Rangazas led the Cardinals to 49 wins, including Plattsburgh being named a SUNYAC tri-champion his first season. The team then reached a program-high 10 wins in 1965. Dr. Rangazas also coached football when the school began carried a squad.
Outside of coaching, he was instrumental in bringing the World University Games of the International Sports Federation (FISU) and the U.S. Olympic team to campus and the North Country in 1972. Since 2006, the Cardinal baseball coaching staff issues its annual Ernie Rangazas Cardinal Award “to the player who best exemplifies the meaning of Plattsburgh State baseball.”
