Verkey was a three-time All-American athlete for the Cardinals men’s track and field team.
 
As a sophomore, he was the National Champion in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles to earn his first All-American honors. Following his outstanding year, he was named the Plattsburgh State co-Athlete of the Year in 1999.
 
In his final year, he raced to All-American accolades in two events. Verkey finished fifth in the 110-meter high hurdles and sixth in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles.
 
Prior to his graduation, he was named the recipient of the Plattsburgh State Senior Achievement Award in 2001.
 
During his career, the Cardinal men’s outdoor track and field team made two appearances at the NCAA Championships in 1998 and 2000.

Where ie he now:

Chris is in his sixth year as a physical education teacher at Saranac Middle School. He has coached nine seasons of outdoor track and field at four different schools, acting as a sprints and hurdles coach.

Three years ago, Chris was named the head coach at Saranac Central School. He has led the Chiefs to three straight Section VIII Championships. Chris also coached a back-to-back state champion in the 400 hurdles while coaching at Beekmantown High School.

Chris resides in Plattsburgh, N.Y. with his wife, Megan.
