2021-22 Plattsburgh State Women's Indoor Track and Field Season Preview

2021-22 Roster

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y.
– The Plattsburgh State women's track and field team looks to keep its spot in the top half of the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) during the 2021-22 indoor season, as the Cardinals bring back five point scorers from the 2020 conference meet in which Plattsburgh State placed fourth overall.

The COVID-19 pandemic forced the cancellation of the 2020-21 indoor season, and while campus protocols have allowed for practices to return to some degree of normalcy, the Cardinals have had to be creative with practice planning working around the renovation of the Field House track and gymnasium. That multi-million-dollar project will ultimately result in a new track as well as new rubber flooring, both of which will help immensely with training and minimizing injuries.

"We know that this year is going to be a little bit of a challenge, but we're very excited about what the future holds for Plattsburgh State cross country and track and field," head coach Nick Jones said. "It's going to be tremendous when it's finished. We're going to be able to hopefully stay healthier and do some different things we hadn't done in the past. Everyone is incredibly excited about it."

In the meantime, with that space offline due to the project, the team has adapted its training, from throwers using the racquet ball courts in Memorial Hall to sprinters working on block starts in hallways. These challenges, however, have come with benefits, according to Jones.

"I think it's a little bit exciting that we get to do some things that we don't usually don't get to focus on," Jones said. "We focus a lot more on strength, block starts, technique and tempo at a slower pace just because of being outside in the cold and we don't want people to get hurt. Usually, we focus a lot more on speed and power."

In addition, the altered practice locations have allowed for more individualized work.

"We've been practicing in smaller groups, so there's been a lot more individual attention," Jones said. "I think they like that with what we've done the past few weeks."

Sprints:
Pacing the Cardinals in the sprints is senior Janyll Barber (Dannemora, N.Y./Saranac), who placed fifth in the 400-meter dash at the 2019 SUNYAC Championships and ran the second leg of the Cardinals' third-place 4x400-meter relay at the 2020 conference meet. Barber, who dipped under 60 seconds on the outdoor track in the 400-meter dash last spring, looks to be a key asset to Plattsburgh State's sprint group.

Junior Deanna Zoch (Nassau, N.Y./Columbia) ran the second leg on the Cardinals' distance medley relay at the 2020 SUNYAC Championships and will look to provide a veteran presence to the group, while sophomores Michaela Schaffer (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) and Millie Lichtenwalner-Seabaugh (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Walter Panas) competed during outdoor season last year. First-year students Kelsea Greenthal (Hornell, N.Y./Hornell), Angelina Lyons (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Plattsburgh) and Sydney Wise (Bronx, N.Y./Millennium Art Academy) round out the remainder of the sprint group.

Middle Distance:
Senior Aislyn McDonough (Rouses Point, N.Y./Northeastern Clinton) finished fifth in the 800-meter run at the 2020 indoor conference meet and placed as the runner-up in the event at the 2021 outdoor SUNYAC meet. Count on McDonough to vie for a spot at the top of the conference in the event and be a key component of the distance medley relay.

Distance:
Senior Rebecca Block (Lake Grove, N.Y./Sachem North) headlines the distance group, as she finished eighth in the mile run at the SUNYAC Championships in 2020. Senior Kristen Thomas (Islip, N.Y./Islip) and junior Madison Myer (Cape Girardeau, Mo./Carthage [N.Y.]) are returners, while junior Andie Carroll (New Paltz, N.Y./New Paltz) and sophomores Hannah Cluck (Johnson City, N.Y./Johnson City) and Natalia Castro (Washingtonville, N.Y./Washingtonville) competed for the Cardinals during the outdoor season last year.

First-year students Emma Ginnane (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River), Skyler Misiaszek (Castleton, N.Y./Maple Hill), Lauren Purvis (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) and Sarah Smith (Lake Pleasant, N.Y./Wells) all ran cross country for Plattsburgh State this fall and are entering their first season on the track.

Jumps:
Barber and senior Jillian Magoon (West Chazy, N.Y./Beekmantown) each qualified for the SUNYAC meet in 2020, with Barber competing in the long jump and Magoon competing in the triple jump. Senior Ann Beauchamp (Potsdam, N.Y./Potsdam) and junior Courtney Macey (West Chazy, N.Y./Beekmantown) each have at least a season of collegiate indoor track and field under their belts, while junior Mikayla Osmer (Cutchogue, N.Y./Mattituck) and Schaffer each competing during the outdoor season last year. Lyons is the lone newcomer to the jump group.

Throws:
Seniors Kaitlyn Bjelko (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Beekmantown), Journey Myricks (Westbay, N.Y./Shaker) and juniors Madeline Taylor (Rensselaer, N.Y./Columbia) and Jasmine Piper (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Plattsburgh) are all returning SUNYAC indoor qualifiers, as the quartet looks to help fortify the throws group during the indoor season. Returners include Beauchamp, seniors Bliss Rhoads (Copake, N.Y./Taconic Hills) and Erin Wilson (Washingtonville, N.Y./Washingtonville) and junior Izzy Kocienda (Rock Tavern, N.Y./Washingtonville), while first-year students Alaina Conners (Adams, N.Y./South Jefferson) and Megan Thornton (Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward Melville) join the team for their first collegiate season of indoor track and field.

Multis:
Senior Kristen Boerke (Washingtonville, N.Y./Washingtonville) is a two-time point scorer in the pentathlon at the SUNYAC indoor championships, finishing as runner-up her freshman year. Furthermore, she placed sixth in the high jump and qualified for the SUNYAC meet in the long jump in 2020. Look for Boerke to be a factor in the pentathlon once again this year.

Sophomore Katie Bergé (Fayetteville, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) competed during the outdoor season last year and looks to contribute in the pentathlon this season.
