PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's cross country team will begin its season on Saturday, Aug. 30, when it hosts the 43rd-annual Cardinal Classic at 11:45 a.m.

Nathan Petesch begins his first year as head coach of the program and will look to compete for a top finish at the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Championships this year after the team took home a fifth-place finish last year. This year, the Cardinals will race at their home course of Rugar Woods in Plattsburgh, N.Y., for the SUNYAC Championships, a course the returners know well, and the newcomers will get to know as the Cardinals host two races at home before SUNYACs. The team will also have the opportunity to preview the NCAA Regionals course.

"The team is showing that they're hungry and excited to get after it," said Petesch. "With the mix of seasoned veterans and talented newcomers, we're focusing on building that team dynamic & gaining confidence from week to week. We want to be at our best in the biggest moments & compete with heart when the championship season arrives."

After the departure of All-SUNYAC runner Sarah Smith, junior Grace Estus (Clifton Park, N.Y. / Shenendehowa) will look to step in as a top runner for the Cardinals after enjoying a successful first season with the team, in which she finished as a top-two runner in six of seven races. Estus was 25th at the SUNYAC Championships, finishing behind Smith as the second Cardinal to cross the finish line. Sophomore Ella Stuttard (Oriskany Falls, N.Y. / Waterville) enjoyed a strong first year scoring in six of seven races, while senior Marissa Colvin (South Glens Falls, N.Y. / South Glens Falls) brings veteran experience to the group, earning All-SUNYAC honors in 2023.

Junior Lillian Moran (Albany, N.Y. / Albany) was a consistent scorer for the Cardinals last season, finishing 38th at SUNYACs, coming in as the third runner for Plattsburgh. Sophomore Jillian Head (Suffern, N.Y. / Suffern) and senior Ginny Luchetti (Marcellus, N.Y. / Marcellus) round out the returners who placed in the top seven at the SUNYAC Championship.

Other returners for Plattsburgh State include Isabelle Cunningham (Bethlehem, N.Y. / Bethlehem), Kailyn Ginter (Northville, N.Y. / Northville), Julia Robinson (Chester Springs, Pa. / Downingtown East), and Lexie Rostak (Plattsburgh, N.Y. / Beekmantown).

Five women make up the rest of the roster and will be competing on the Plattsburgh State women's cross country team for the first time in 2025. Ellie LeRoy (Malone, N.Y. / Franklin Academy) competed for the track and field team last year and will join the cross country team for the 2025 season. Graduate student Nora Graves (Plattsburgh, N.Y. / Plattsburgh) will bring some experience to the Cardinals after four seasons at St. Lawrence, while sophomores Hailey Bogdanowicz-Wilson (Schenectady, N.Y. / Schenectady) and Willow McLean (Norfolk, Conn. / Plattsburgh), and first-year Lizzie Owens (Washington, D.C. / Vicenza), will all look to make an impact in the 2025 season.
