2021-22 Plattsburgh State Men's Indoor Track and Field Season Preview

2021-22 Roster

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y.
– Coming off its best finish at the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Indoor Track and Field Championships since 2006, the Plattsburgh State men's track and field team looks to build upon that success in 2021-22.

The COVID-19 pandemic forced the cancellation of the 2020-21 indoor season, and while campus protocols have allowed for practices to return to some degree of normalcy, the Cardinals have had to be creative with practice planning working around the renovation of the Field House track and gymnasium. That multi-million-dollar project will ultimately result in a new track as well as new rubber flooring, both of which will help immensely with training and minimizing injuries.

"We know that this year is going to be a little bit of a challenge, but we're very excited about what the future holds for Plattsburgh State cross country and track and field," head coach Nick Jones said. "It's going to be tremendous when it's finished. We're going to be able to hopefully stay healthier and do some different things we hadn't done in the past. Everyone is incredibly excited about it."

In the meantime, with that space offline due to the project, the team has adapted its training, from throwers using the racquet ball courts in Memorial Hall to sprinters working on block starts in hallways. These challenges, however, have come with benefits, according to Jones.

"I think it's a little bit exciting that we get to do some things that we don't usually don't get to focus on," Jones said. "We focus a lot more on strength, block starts, technique and tempo at a slower pace just because of being outside in the cold and we don't want people to get hurt. Usually, we focus a lot more on speed and power."

In addition, the altered practice locations have allowed for more individualized work.

"We've been practicing in smaller groups, so there's been a lot more individual attention," Jones said. "I think they like that with what we've done the past few weeks."

Sprints:
Junior Jared Davidson (Washingtonville, N.Y./Washingtonville) headlines a deep sprint group, as he finished third in the 200-meter dash and fourth in the 400-meter dash at the conference meet his freshman year. Look for Davidson to continue his push to qualify for postseason meets and serve as a staple on the 4x400-meter relay.

Junior Brexton Montville (Cadyville, N.Y./Saranac) qualified for the SUNYAC meet in the 200-meter dash in 2020 as well, while senior Michael Meddings (Massena, N.Y./Massena) and junior Cameron Giuliano (Shokan, N.Y./Onteora) also bring collegiate indoor experience to the sprint group. Junior Aidan Masten (Peru, N.Y./Seton Catholic) and sophomore Cody Monnat (Croghan, N.Y./Beaver River) competed during the Cardinals' outdoor season last year, while first-year students Nicolas Anderson (Bronx, N.Y./All Hallows) and Thomas McDonough (Guilderland, N.Y./Guilderland) look to make an impact in their first season on the team.

Distance:
Junior Liam Gildea (Washingtonville, N.Y./Washingtonville) is the lone returner to the distance corps, as the Cardinals boast young talent, most of which competed during Plattsburgh State's cross country season. Sophomores Michael Brockway (Washingtonville, N.Y./Washingtonville), Billy Gagnon (Scotia, N.Y./Scotia-Glenville), Sean Grady (Lagrangeville, N.Y./Arlington) and Levi Sochia (Norfolk, N.Y./Norwood-Norfolk) competed for the Cardinals during last year's outdoor season, while newcomers to the group include first-year students Peter Basile (Castleton, N.Y./Maple Hill), Noah Bonesteel (Averill Park, N.Y./Averill Park), Spencer Daby (Au Sable Forks, N.Y./AuSable Valley), Justin Kumrow (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac), Daniel Pavelec (Loudonville, N.Y./Shaker), Joshua Reed (Skaneateles, N.Y./Skaneateles) and Denali Rodriguez-Garnica (Port Henry, N.Y./Moriah).

Jumps:
Masten is the lone jumper on the Cardinals' roster, as he competed in the long jump during last year's outdoor season. Look for Masten to vie for a spot in the SUNYAC Championships.

Throws:
Junior Aidan Tous (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) is the only returning thrower who has competed collegiately indoors before, while sophomore Jorge Cabrera (Mount Vernon, N.Y./Mount Vernon) threw for the Cardinals during last year's outdoor season. Rounding out the throws group is sophomore Spencer Trudo (Champlain, N.Y./Northeastern Clinton).
