BROCKPORT, N.Y. – Senior
Anthony Ciccarelli (Smithtown, N.Y./Commack) finished second in the heptathlon by just six points with a score of 4,591, helping lead the Plattsburgh State men's track and field team to a fifth-place finish out of nine teams with 33 points following day two of the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Indoor Track and Field Championships hosted by The College at Brockport on Saturday at the SERC Field House.
It marked the Cardinals' best indoor team finish at the conference meet on the men's side since the 2006 SUNYAC Championships, where Plattsburgh State took third.
In the component events of the heptathlon, Ciccarelli won the shot put (11.34 meters – 37' 2.5"), placed second in the long jump (6.15 meters – 20' 2.25"), the 60-meter dash (7.29), the 1,000-meter run (2:52.25) and the 60-meter hurdles (8.81), finished third in the pole vault (3.60 meters – 11' 9.75") and tied for fifth in the high jump (1.75 meters – 5' 8.75").
Freshman
Jared Davidson (Washingtonville, N.Y./Washingtonville) competed in finals in both the 200-meter dash and the 400-meter dash, finishing third (22.28) and fifth (50.24), respectively. Notably, in the 200-meter dash, just two one-hundredths of a second separated him from the event's champion, junior Peyton Lalone from SUNY Cortland.
Freshman
Brendyn Marrero (Rock Tavern, N.Y./Washingtonville) improved his spot in the 60-meter dash final, placing third with a time of 7.08. Senior
Andrew Horan (Albany, N.Y./Guilderland) also scored points on Saturday, taking eighth in the 800-meter run (2:06.06).
In the 4x400-meter relay, freshman
Cameron Aviles (Campbell Hall, N.Y./Washingtonville), Marrero, freshman
Brexton Montville (Cadyville, N.Y./Saranac) and Davidson teamed up to finish fourth with a time of 3:25.75.
SUNY Geneseo won the team title with 202 points, while SUNY Cortland and The College at Brockport finished second (161.83) and third (149.33), respectively.
Plattsburgh State will have its final opportunity to qualify for the NCAA Division III Indoor Championships at the All-Atlantic Region Track and Field Conference (AARTFC) Indoor Championships from Friday-Saturday, March 6-7, at Nazareth College.
