CORTLAND, N.Y. – Junior
Isaiah Ritter (Peekskill, N.Y. / Peekskill) of the Plattsburgh State men's track and field team earned a silver medal in the long jump, placing second with an All-Atlantic Region Track and Field Conference (AARTFC) qualifying mark of 6.99 meters as the Cardinals began action at the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Outdoor Track and Field Championships. After one day of competition, Plattsburgh has 19 points and sits in sixth place.
Graduate student
Faris Webber (Arlington, Va. / Washington Liberty) is competing in the decathlon and currently sits in fifth place with 2,754 points, highlighted by a first-place finish in the shot put with a personal-best throw of 12.26 meters. He also recorded a personal best in the 100-meter dash, clocking 12.25 seconds for seventh place.
The Cardinals saw another athlete record an AARTFC qualifying mark, as senior
Charles Cypress (New Windsor, N.Y. / Cornwall) placed second in the 200-meter dash preliminaries with a time of 21.52 seconds to qualify for the finals. C. Cypress also advanced to the finals in the 100-meter dash, placing seventh with an AARTFC qualifying time of 10.95 seconds.
In the 110-meter hurdles, sophomore
Thomas Clark (Stone Ridge, N.Y. / Rondout Valley) and first-year
Max Page (Plattsburgh, N.Y. / Beekmantown) both qualified for the finals. Clark clocked an AARTFC time of 15.07 seconds to finish fourth, followed by Page in seventh with a personal-best time of 15.31 seconds, also an AARTFC qualifying mark. In the 400-meter hurdles preliminaries, Page and classmate
Michael Slominski (Plattsburgh, N.Y. / Plattsburgh) each recorded personal bests, finishing in 1:01.34 and 1:04.98, respectively.
In distance action, senior
Samuel Van Auken (Greenville, N.Y. / Greenville) just missed out on a medal, placing fourth in the 10,000-meter run with a time of 32:52.20.
In the field events, fifth-year
Jeremiah Smith (Brooklyn, N.Y. / East New York Family Academy) placed fifth in the long jump with a leap of 6.76 meters, while Baker placed seventh with a mark of 6.68 meters, adding points to Plattsburgh's total.
The Cardinals will resume competition at the SUNYAC Outdoor Championships tomorrow at the SUNY Cortland Stadium Complex, beginning at 10 a.m.
