BROCKPORT, N.Y. – With several competitors poised to score points in finals on Saturday, the Plattsburgh State men's track and field team currently sits in eighth place out of nine teams with three points after day one of the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Indoor Track and Field Championships hosted by The College at Brockport on Friday at the SERC Field House.
The Cardinals' day-one points came as a result of a sixth-place finish in the distance medley relay. Freshmen
Liam Gildea (Washingtonville, N.Y./Washingtonville),
Cameron Aviles (Campbell Hall, N.Y./Washingtonville) and
Ryan Worobey (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) and junior
Joseph Chianese (Shoreham, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) combined for a time of 10:53.59.
Freshman
Jared Davidson (Washingtonville, N.Y./Washingtonville) qualified for finals in both the 200-meter dash (22.66) and the 400-meter dash (50.73), finishing fourth overall in the trial heats in both events. Freshman
Brendyn Marrero (Rock Tavern, N.Y./Washingtonville) also finished fourth among the competitors in the trial heats of the 60-meter dash, clocking a time of 7.11, and was just outside the top eight in the 200-meter dash, placing ninth by .04 with a time of 22.86.
Senior
Anthony Ciccarelli (Smithtown, N.Y./Commack) leads the heptathlon field through four events with a score of 2,552 points. He took first in the shot put (11.34 meters – 37' 2.5"), second in the 60-meter dash (7.29) and second in the long jump (6.15 meters – 20' 2.25") while tying for fifth in the high jump (1.75 meters – 5' 8.75"). Ciccarelli will wrap up competition tomorrow in the heptathlon by competing in the 60-meter hurdles, the pole vault and the 1,000-meter run.
Plattsburgh State concludes action at the meet tomorrow, with the first events beginning at 10 a.m.
