CANTON, N.Y.--The Plattsburgh State volleyball team won its first match of the season in come from behind fashion, downing SUNYIT in four sets to conclude the Victory Promotions Invitational on the campus of Saint Lawrence University. Earlier Saturday, the Cardinals (1-6) fell to Rochester Tech in three sets.
But against the Wildcats, a 23-25, 25-17, 25-15, 25-19 win, Plattsburgh passed well and put the ball down, according to head coach Dena O'Connell. "We made some adjustments during the weekend and it payed off. We kept our energy-level up both on- and off the court, so this was a nice win," she said.
Kayla Nason, who was named to the all-tournament team, directed the offense with 33 assists to go along with three digs and two blocks.
Rosi Cummings led the attack with a career-high 12 kills, followed by Amanda Wickers with nine, Theresa Lilly had seven and Abby Mell, six. Cummings added seven digs while Lilly had three, and Mell turned aside three blocks.
Andrea Kalter added three service aces and 14 digs and Chyresse Wells contributed seven digs.
Nason made 22 assists in a 25-22, 25-17, 25-12 loss to the Tigers. Cummings had a team-best 10 kills and Lilly had seven again. Kalter digged seven balls.
Things started well enough for the Cardinals, who led 22-17 in the first set. But RIT capitalized on some Plattsburgh errors to end the set on an 8-0 run, gaining momentum for the rest of the match.
"If we had won the opening set, the result could've gone either way. That's tough to bounce back from and it showed after that," O'Connell said. "When we minimize our mistakes and maintain confidence, we can play with anybody."
