Girma Earns All-SUNYAC Third Team Honors for Women’s Volleyball

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Junior outside hitter Liya Girma (Sachse, Texas / Bishop Lynch) of the Plattsburgh State women's volleyball team has been named to the 2025 All-State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Third Team, as announced by the conference office on Tuesday afternoon. This is Girma's first career All-SUNYAC selection.

Girma was the Cardinals' top offensive option, leading the team in points, kills, and service aces. The junior outside hitter totaled 316 points this season, ranking seventh in the conference in that category, and averaged 3.47 points per set, which was also seventh. She finished the season with 261 kills, slotting in at ninth in the conference in total kills and seventh in kills per set with 2.87. The Sachse, Texas native was one of the conference's top serve-and-receive players, tallying 49 service aces, finishing third in the league, and 523 receptions, finishing in ninth. Girma contributed as a two-way player for the Cardinals, making a strong impact in the back row with 230 digs (2.53 per set), ranking second on the team in both categories. She made her presence felt on both ends all season long, posting 12 double-doubles. Over the season, she had some outstanding performances, recording a season-high 23.5 points and nine service aces against VTSU-Castleton on Sept. 13, later followed by a season-high 20 kills and 20 digs against Canton on Oct. 11.

Cortland's Kira Pirrera and Alyssa Rich won Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year, respectively. Oswego State's Alaina Dudzinski was tabbed the Rookie of the Year, while Geoff Braun of Fredonia was named the Coach of the Year. The full all-conference teams can be found here.
