CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's volleyball team suffered a 3-0 (25-14, 25-16, 25-16) defeat to Cortland in their State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) finale on Saturday afternoon.
Junior outside hitters
Iris Mulvey (Middle Island, N.Y. / Longwood) and
Liya Girma (Sachse, Texas / Bishop Lynch) led the team offensively with seven and six kills, while sophomore
Anabella Almeida (Pine Bush, N.Y. / Pine Bush) set up the offense with nine assists. Defensively, Mulvey led the team in digs with five, and senior
Kyleigh Ganz (Phoenix, Ariz. / Seton Catholic Prep) led all players in total blocks with four.
For the Red Dragons, Emalee Ballou led all players in kills with 13, Melissa O'Connor led all players in assists with 20, and Alyssa Rich led all players in digs with 11.
Overall, for the match, the Cardinals had a slight 6-5 edge in blocks, but Cortland won the battle in service aces 6-1 and had a 28-24 advantage in digs.
Plattsburgh State moves to 9-15 (2-7 SUNYAC) and wraps up its 2025 campaign at home when the team hosts Skidmore on Friday, Nov. 7, at 6 p.m. Cortland moves to 21-6 (9-0 SUNYAC) and next plays Brandeis and William Smith next Saturday, Nov. 8.
The Red Dragons controlled the first set early, jumping out to a 10-3 lead after Mulvey put down a kill. The Cardinals' offense got a little momentum, scoring back-to-back points to make the score 16-8, but it wasn't enough as Cortland went on to win the first set 25-14.
After a slow start, the Cardinals' offense picked it up as Girma put down back-to-back kills and made the score 17-11 Red Dragons. Plattsburgh kept battling and used a 3-0 surge featuring a Mulvey kill and Girma service ace to make the score 22-15 Red Dragons, but Cortland outscored Plattsburgh 3-1 to end the set for a 25-16 set win.
Thanks to an early 6-0 run, the Red Dragons were out in front 13-6 midway through the third set. The Cardinals stormed back after a 4-0 burst, including two kills from Mulvey, made the score 13-10. Despite the Cardinals' offensive rally, the Red Dragons didn't lose any momentum and used multiple 3-0 runs to secure a 25-16 set win and won the match 3-0.
