OSWEGO, N.Y. -- The Plattsburgh State baseball team, ranked No. 23 nationally by the ABCA coaches' poll, set a program record with their 28th win after sweeping both ends of a wild doubleheader at Oswego State, 21-12 and 10-7, at Laker Diamond Field on Sunday. The Cardinals improve to 28-8 overall and have clinched a spot in the State University of New York Athletic Conference Tournament with their 7-5 conference ledger. The Lakers fall to 15-12 and 2-8 in the SUNYAC.
In Game 1, Plattsburgh smashed a season-high 24 hits while also scoring its most runs in a game this year.
Danny Roeser led the way with a 5-for-6 performance at the plate, driving in four runs and scoring three himself.
Anthony Presto had four hits and scored four runs,
Pat Shaughnessy went 3-for-7 with four RBI and
Tory Bouyea,
Donny Coolidge ,
Andrew Gooch ,
Matt Burns,
Kris Cauchon added two hits apiece.
Shaughnessy homered with a man on base to help the Cardinals take a 3-0 lead in the first inning.
After the Lakers answered with a run of their own in the home half of the frame and then added three in the second, Plattsburgh reclaimed a 6-4 lead in the third.
That also proved to be shortlived as Oswego scored three runs in the fourth for a 7-6 advantage. However, the Cardinals scored five runs on three hits and three errors to go ahead for good at 11-7.
After Gooch walked with one out in the sixth, Roeser hit a home run to give the Cardinals a 13-7 bulge.
Every starter in the lineup had at least one hit for the Cardinals.
In the nightcap, Shaughnessy had three hits and three RBI and
Andrew Baio connected for three hits and two driven in.
Plattsburgh started out strong again by scoring three runs in the very first inning, but Oswego responded with three in both the second and third for a 6-3 lead.
The Cardinals chipped away with single runs in the fourth and fifth frames and then in the sixth, crossed the plate with three more. Gooch delivered a bases-loaded single for the key play to put Plattsburgh up to stay, 7-6.
Dan Tracy gave up seven runs and scattered 12 hits--11 on singles--but more importantly, improved to 8-0 to set a Cardinals pitching record for wins in a season.
Matt Seymour pitched a scoreless ninth to earn the save, fanning two and allowing a hit.
