TROY, N.Y. – Fifth-year
Jeremiah Smith (Brooklyn, N.Y. / East New York Family Academy) of the Plattsburgh State men's track and field team broke the outdoor program record in the long jump with a mark of 7.24 meters, finishing second on Day One of the RPI Friday Night Under the Lights & Alumni Meet. As a team, the Cardinals sit in third place with 31 points after the opening day.
The long jump highlighted the field events, while the discus was the only throwing event Plattsburgh competed in on the day. Smith led the Cardinals in the long jump, followed by juniors
Isaiah Ritter (Peekskill, N.Y. / Peekskill) and
Tyler Baker (Plattsburgh, N.Y. / Plattsburgh). Ritter placed third with a jump of 7.12 meters, while Baker recorded a personal-best mark of 7.01 meters to finish fourth.
In the discus throw, Plattsburgh had two scorers finish in the top eight, led by sophomore
Nathan Webber (Cadyville, N.Y. / Saranac), who placed third with a personal-best throw of 43.41 meters. First-year
Caleb Lewis (New City, N.Y.) added a point with an eighth-place finish, recording a throw of 40.78 meters.
On the track, the steeplechase opened the distance events, where sophomore
Brody Serfass (Endwell, N.Y. / Maine-Endwell) paced the Cardinals with a seventh-place finish in 10:31.99. Junior
Nate Alexander (Marcellus, N.Y. / Marcellus) narrowly missed out on scoring, placing ninth in 10:48.21, while first-year
Bryton Mandigo (Hartford, N.Y. / Hartford) followed in 10th with a time of 10:59.08.
The 10,000-meter run capped the running events, with senior
Samuel Van Auken (Greenville, N.Y. / Greenville) leading the way with a sixth-place finish and a personal-best time of 32:27.20. Junior
Matthias Lauvau (Rye, N.Y. / Rye) placed 12th (35:08.68), followed closely by senior
Jack Natali Jr. (Clayton, N.Y. / Thousand Islands) in 13th (35:14.66).
The Cardinals will resume competition at the RPI Friday Night Under the Lights & Alumni Meet on Saturday, Apr. 11, at Harkness Field, with events beginning at 11 a.m.
