BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State men's track and field team competed on Day One of the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Indoor Championships.
After Day One, Plattsburgh has seven points and sits in eighth place, led by a strong performance from senior
Samuel Van Auken (Greenville, N.Y. / Greenville).
Van Auken posted the top finish for the Cardinals, placing fourth in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 15:25.50, earning five points.
The distance medley relay team of first-year
Michael Ayala (New Paltz, N.Y. / New Paltz), sophomore
Ethan Cypress (New Windsor, N.Y. / Cornwall), first-year
Bryton Mandigo (Hartford, N.Y. / Hartford), and junior
Zander Brown (Wappingers Falls, N.Y. / Roy C. Ketcham) also scored for Plattsburgh, finishing with a time of 11:07.67 and earning two points.
Graduate student
Faris Webber (Arlington, Va. / Washington Liberty) is halfway through the heptathlon with a score of 2,318 and is currently in fourth place, highlighted by a first-place throw of 11.90 meters in the shot put. First-year
Michael Slominski (Plattsburgh, N.Y. / Plattsburgh) is also competing in the event and currently has a score of 1,868.
Cardinals who qualified for their respective event finals tomorrow include senior
Charles Cypress (New Windsor, N.Y. / Cornwall), sophomore
Thomas Clark (Stone Ridge, N.Y. / Rondout Valley), and senior
Jordan Williams (Bronx, N.Y. / Cardinal Hayes).
C. Cypress qualified for two event finals, finishing second in the 200-meter dash with an All-Atlantic Regional Track and Field Conference (AARTFC) qualifying time of 22.13 seconds and third in the 60-meter dash with an AARTFC qualifying mark of 6.91 seconds.
Clark advanced to the finals in the 60-meter hurdles with a fourth-place time of 8.48 seconds, earning an AARTFC qualifying mark, while Williams secured the final qualifying spot in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.02 seconds, also meeting the AARTFC standard.
The Cardinals will resume competition at the SUNYAC Indoor Championships tomorrow at the Special Events Recreation Center beginning at 10:30 a.m.
