Multiple First-Place Finishes Highlight Second-Place Finish for Men’s Track and Field at SLU Open

CANTON, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State men's track and field team turned in an impressive performance at the SLU Open with multiple first-place finishes and All-Atlantic Regional Track and Field Conference (AARTFC) qualifying marks, finishing second overall with 143 team points.

Plattsburgh dominated the 60-meter dash, placing five athletes in the finals. Senior Jordan Williams (Bronx, N.Y. / Cardinal Hayes) won the event, clocking a time of 7.03 seconds for 10 points, followed by first-year Milo Pearsall (Cold Spring, N.Y. / Haldane) in second with a time of 7.12 seconds for eight points.

Fifth-year Jeremiah Smith (Brooklyn, N.Y. / East New York Family Academy) placed fourth (7.25 seconds), earning five points, and right behind him was sophomore Ethan Cypress (New Windsor, N.Y. / Cornwall) in fifth with a mark of 7.26 seconds for four points.

In the 60-meter hurdles, sophomore Thomas Clark (Stone Ridge, N.Y. / Rondout Valley) earned the win with a time of 8.52 seconds, earning 10 points. First-year Max Page (Plattsburgh, N.Y. / Beekmantown) added five points with a fourth-place finish in 8.86 seconds, and first-year Michael Slominski (Plattsburgh, N.Y. / Plattsburgh) scored one point in eighth place with a time of 9.28 seconds. Both Page and Slominski ran the best times of their career in the event.

In the 200-meter dash, senior Charles Cypress (New Windsor, N.Y. / Cornwall) delivered one of the top performances of the meet, winning the event in 22.30 seconds to earn 10 points and hit an AARTFC qualifying mark.

E. Cypress added eight points with a runner-up finish in 22.94 seconds, a personal best, while Williams placed fourth in 23.12 seconds for five points.

First-year Giel Cheverez-Soto (Amsterdam, N.Y. / Amsterdam) also competed in the event and ran the best mark of his career at 24.00 seconds.

Cheverez-Soto scored in the 400-meter dash, placing eighth with a personal best time of 54.73 seconds to earn one point.

In the 800-meter run, first-year Michael Ayala (New Paltz, N.Y. / New Paltz) placed eighth overall in 2:05.07, a personal best, to contribute one point to the team score.

Junior Zander Brown (Wappingers Falls, N.Y. / Roy C. Ketcham) earned eight points in the one-mile run with a second-place finish in 4:41.96.

The Cardinals had a strong showing in the 5,000-meter run, placing five runners in the top seven. Sophomore Brody Serfass (Endwell, N.Y. / Maine Endwell) led the way with a runner-up finish in 16:50.05 to score eight points. Senior Jack Natali Jr. (Clayton, N.Y. / Thousand Islands) was third in 16:53.41 for six points, junior Nate Alexander (Marcellus, N.Y. / Marcellus) placed fifth in 17:10.24 for four points, junior Matthias Lauvau (Rye, N.Y. / Rye) finished sixth in 17:23.24 for three points, and first-year Brennan Muecke (Bemus Point, N.Y. / Maple Grove) took seventh in 17:25.00 to earn two points. Lauvau's time was good enough for a new personal best.

In the field events, first-year Collin Pringle (Suffern, N.Y. / Suffern) placed third in the high jump, clearing 1.90 meters to earn six points.

Graduate student Faris Webber (Arlington, Va. / Washington Liberty) scored in the pole vault, finishing sixth with a clearance of 3.25 meters to earn four points, marking the best height of his career.

Junior Isaiah Ritter (Peekskill, N.Y. / Peekskill) delivered a standout performance in the long jump, winning the event with a leap of 6.95 meters to secure 10 points and an AARTFC qualifying mark. Smith added six points with a third-place jump of 6.72 meters.

In the triple jump, first-year Rashid Okine (Schenectady, N.Y. / Schenectady) earned two points with a seventh-place finish and a mark of 11.37 meters, the best jump of his career.

The Cardinals scored heavily in the shot put, led by first-year Roanan Ross (Memphis, N.Y. / Jordan-Elbridge), who placed fourth with a throw of 12.15 meters to earn five points. Sophomore Nathan Webber (Cadyville, N.Y. / Saranac) finished fifth (11.76m) for four points, and sophomore Manny Olivier (Glen Cove, N.Y. / Glen Cove) added two points with a seventh-place throw of 11.27 meters, a personal best throw.

Sophomore Zach Stevens (Queensbury, N.Y. / Glens Falls) and first-year Caleb Lewis (New City, N.Y.) also competed in the event, recording personal best throws of 10.38 meters, respectively.

N. Webber added three more points in the weight throw, placing sixth with a personal best throw of 13.78 meters. Lewis also bested his career mark in this event with a throw of 11.40 meters.

The Cardinals return to action at the SUNYAC Championships on Friday, Feb. 27, and Saturday, Feb. 28, hosted by SUNY Brockport. Only athletes who have met the qualifying standards will travel to compete.
