TROY, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State men's track and field team competed at the RPI Friday Night Under the Lights Invitational on Friday, April 12, placing fourth out of 12 teams in attendance. Junior
Charles Cypress (New Windsor, N.Y./Cornwall) placed second in the 100-meter dash with an All-Atlantic Region Track and Field Conference (AARTFC) Championships qualifying mark, and first-year
Jackson Hooper (Elizabethtown, N.Y./Boquet Valley) won the high jump with an AARTFC Championships qualifying mark.
Cypress placed second in the 100-meter dash and posted an AARTFC qualifying mark of 10.94 seconds in his first outing of the outdoor season. Hooper won the high jump for the second straight week, as his 1.95-meter jump was a new career best. Cypress also competed in the 200-meter dash, placing eighth with a time of 22.45 seconds.
As a team, the Cardinals placed fourth with 56 points. RPI won their home meet with 324 points, well ahead of NCAA Division I Albany, which had 156 points. St. Lawrence was the only other team ahead of Plattsburgh, with 63 points.
Junior
Jordan Williams (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Hayes) ran alongside Cypress in the 100-meter dash and posted a time of 11.21 seconds to earn fifth place. Sophomore
Ryan Beltran (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Hayes) was fourth in the 400-meter dash for Plattsburgh, posting a new career-best time of 50.84 seconds.
First-year
Joshua Gaboriault (Saranac, N.Y./Saranac) earned Plattsburgh five points in the team standings with his fourth-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles, finishing in 1:01.92.
First-year Samuel Van Auken (Greenville, N.Y./Greenville) placed eighth in the 10,000-meter run, scoring in the second straight meet for Plattsburgh, with his time of 32:40.62.
The 4x100-meter relay team of Beltran and first-years
Ethan Cypress (New Windsor, N.Y./Cornwall),
Jack Scauri (Hauppage, N.Y./Hauppauge), and
Brian Shannon (Goshen, N.Y./Goshen) placed sixth with a mark of 45.65 seconds.
In the field events, Hooper's win highlighted the group's efforts, but plenty of strong efforts came across the board. Senior
Faris Webber (Arlington, Va./Washington Liberty) cleared 1.60 meters to earn seventh place in the same event.
The long jump saw three top-eight finishes for Plattsburgh, with sophomore
Tyler Baker (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Plattsburgh) posting a fourth-place finish with his new career-best mark of 6.67 meters. Fellow sophomore
Isaiah Ritter (Peekskill, N.Y./Peekskill) was not too far behind his teammate, finishing sixth with a 6.42-meter jump. Junior
Julius James (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Hayes) finished eighth in the event, close behind Ritter with a jump of 6.38 meters.
Senior
De'Andre Watson (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Plattsburgh) scored in the triple jump, posting a fifth-place finish with a jump of 11.72 meters.
The Cards are next in action on Friday, April 18, at the Bobbi Palma Spring Classic hosted by the University of Albany.
