CANTON, N.Y. –
Charles Cypress (New Windsor, N.Y./Cornwall) earned a second-place finish and an All-Atlantic Region Track and Field Conference (AARTFC) qualifying time in the 400-meter run as the Plattsburgh State men's track and field team competed at the St. Lawrence Invitational on Saturday. The junior finished with a time of 49.80 seconds, and he has now qualified for the regional meet in three events in the last two meets.
The Cardinals finished the day in third in the team standings with 75.5 points, behind the top team Utica, and the host St. Lawrence Saints.
Close behind Cypress in the 400-meter dash was sophomore
Ryan Beltran (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Hayes) who finished with a personal best mark of 52.96 seconds.
In the distance events, the Cardinals were able to pick up some points with five top-eight finishes. Sophomore
Matt DeJulio (Wynantskill, N.Y./Averill Park) posted an indoor personal best in the 800-meter run, as his 2:04.03 mark earned him sixth place. Senior
JT Zimmerman (Middlesex, N.Y./Marcus Whitman) was seventh in the mile run, with his career-best mark of 4:52.50.
The 5,000-meter run saw three Cardinals finish in the top eight in a nine-man race, with sophomore
Zander Brown (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) placing fifth with his mark of 16:33.71, a new career best. Senior
Denali Rodriguez-Garnica (Port Henry, N.Y./Moriah) also posted a new personal record, as he was sixth with a time of 16:39.13. Finishing in eighth to score for the Cards was sophomore
Matthias Lauvau (Rye, N.Y./Rye Neck).
The Plattsburgh State 4x400-meter relay team of Beltran, Cypress, first-year
Ethan Cypress (New Windsor, N.Y./Cornwall), and first-year
Jack Gregory (Guilderland, N.Y./Guilderland) finished second with a time of 3:37.81.
The long jump event saw three top-five finishes for the Cards, as sophomore
Isaiah Ritter (Peekskill, N.Y./Peekskill) led the way with his jump of 6.27 meters to finish second. Fellow sophomore
Tyler Baker (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Plattsburgh) finished fourth with his jump of 6.14 meters, which was nearly matched by first-year
Trevon Mitchell (Peru, N.Y/Peru) who also had 6.14 meters as his jump but finished in fifth behind Baker.
In the high jump, first-year
Jackson Hooper (Elizabethtown, N.Y./Boquet Valley) cleared 1.80 meters to finish fourth. Baker scored for the Cardinals with an eighth-place finish, clearing 1.65 meters, a new career-best.
The Cardinals are next in action on Tuesday, Feb. 4 when they host their own meet in the Plattsburgh State Field House at 5 p.m.
