2023 Statistics
PLATTSBURGH, NY – The Plattsburgh State Women's Soccer team will begin their 2024 season on the road at the 2024 Stand On Their Shoulders Invitational, when they take on No. 20 William Smith on Friday, Aug. 30, and No. 24 TCNJ on Saturday, August 31.
The team is coming off a 7-5-5 season and a 4-1-4 record in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play. The team earned the third seed in the conference tournament but fell to Geneseo in first-round action. The Cardinals also had four all-conference selections, with two returning in 2024.
Head Coach
Whitney Frary, who begins her third season with the Cardinals, will look to rely on a group that has plenty of experience despite the loss of nine seniors from last year. With all-conference goalkeeper
Lauren Haley (LaGrange, N.Y./Arlington) and two-time All-SUNYAC defender
Casey Granger (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./Arlington), the 2024 group will have a strong backbone to rely on this coming year.
"This season is exciting for a number of reasons, not only with a new group coming in but returning talent that is eager to hit the ground running," Frary said, "We have a challenging out-of-conference schedule that will no doubt prepare us for our conference play. The team is ready to build on last season and continue moving forward with an exciting and close group."
Forwards
With the departure of two-time All-SUNYAC and All-Region forward
Nora Fitzgerald, as well as 2023 All-SUNYAC Second Team selection
Avery Durgan, the team will be looking for different sources to lead the offensive effort in 2024.
Seniors
Allison Brown (Pelham, N.Y./Pelham Memorial) and
Ella Santomassimo (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Arlington) will be counted on to take the scoring load this year, as Brown was third on the team with nine points, and Santomassimo fourth with seven points in 2023.
Other returning forwards include juniors
Claire Bottjer (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Our Lady of Lourdes) and
Sally Gliganic (Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward Melville), as well as sophomore
Macie Bolton (Belchertown, Mass./Belchertown). Bottjer played in six games scoring one goal last year, while Gliganic saw action in 12 contests accumulating 326 minutes.
Newcomers this year to the forward group are
Leah Warren (Lisbon, N.Y./Lisbon) and
Jenna McDonald (Holtsville, N.Y./Sachem East).
Midfielders
With the loss of
Sophia Hatziyianis and
Samantha Rachon to graduation, the midfield unit will see a new group take the majority of minutes, but not without plenty of collegiate experience.
The returning 2024 group is led by three seniors and three juniors, with the seniors consisting of
Amanda Cohen (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Walter Panas),
Catrina Maltes (Washingtonville, N.Y./Washingtonville), and
Jessica Mare (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park). Maltes was tied for fifth on the team with five points last season, while Mare played in 14 games last year. Juniors
Jillian Bezio (Keeseville, N.Y./AuSable Valley),
Hannah Meyers (Peru, N.Y./Peru), and
Kathy Peterson-Ross (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) round out the group of returners, as Bezio played in 14 games last year and Meyers in nine.
The incoming group of midfielders includes some collegiate experience with junior
Kelly Licata (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem North), who played in 35 games over two seasons at New Paltz, scoring five goals. Also joining Licata in their first season in Plattsburgh will be
Bailee Lafountain (Mooers Forks, N.Y./Northeastern Clinton) and
Laci Roberts (Mooers, N.Y./Northeastern Clinton) who were high school teammates.
Defenders
The Cardinal backline will be centered around fifth-year
Casey Granger, who will look to become a three-time All-SUNAYC honoree in her final season for Plattsburgh, as she will have some excellent talent around her for the coming year.
Junior
Alexis Patrick (Burnt Hills, N.Y./Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) and sophomore
Lia Parker saw a lot of action last season, totaling 791 and 504 minutes respectively, as well as senior
Mackenzie Lawless (Dansville, N.Y./Dansville) will look to take the bulk of minutes this season but will have plenty of competition from other returners and newcomers. Sophomore
Maria Mauro (Farmingdale, N.Y./Plainedge) also returns after seeing action in two games last year.
Three sophomores will look to challenge for playing time this year in their first seasons playing college soccer, as
Ellie Graney (Buffalo, N.Y./City Honors), who missed last season due to injury, and new additions
Keira Patrick (Burnt Hills, N.Y./Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) and
Grace Reeve (Voorheesville, N.Y./Clayton A. Bouton) join the Cards in 2024.
First-year newcomers to the Cardinals' defensive unit will be
Amy Crowley (Wallkill, N.Y./Wallkill) and
Anni Schneider (Latham, N.Y./Shaker) as they will look to help build a skilled and deep group for the Cards.
Goalkeepers
A fantastic junior season saw
Lauren Haley earn All-SUNYAC First Team honors and she will look to continue that strong play into her senior year. Last season, she made 70 saves and allowed 19 goals in 15 starts, finishing the year with seven shutouts.
Sophomores
Lily Bailey (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley) and
Brook Lynn DaSilva (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West) will provide relief for Haley in 2024.
