Box Score ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – Plattsburgh State men's soccer was edged by Elizabethtown College 2-1 in overtime on Saturday evening at Ira R. Herr Field.
In the first half of play, Plattsburgh State (0-2-0) and Elizabethtown (1-1-0) each scored once to send the game to halftime tied at 1-1. Both goals were scored off of free kicks, with Elizabethtown's goal coming first. In the 31st minute, the Blue Jays drew a foul just outside the Plattsburgh penalty box. Tate Mohny took the kick and scored into the right side of the net to make the score 1-0 in favor of the Blue Jays. However, the Cardinals would respond less than three minutes later. After a Blue Jay foul, sophomore midfielder
Alex Alejo (Goshen, N.Y./Goshen) took a free kick from the left sideline. Alejo sent a cross to the front of the net to freshman
Devin Lambe (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Beacon), who promptly scored his first collegiate goal.
After Elizabethtown held a 5-3 edge in shots in the first half, each team had six shots, including two on goal, in the second half of play. However, neither team could break the stalemate. The Cardinals' sophomore defender
Andrew Braverman (Sayville, N.Y./Saville) and junior defender
Chris McGovern (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Lakeland) put shots on net in the 78th and 87th minutes, respectively, but Kelvin Del Cid (1-1-0) stopped both shots in net for the Blue Jays. Plattsburgh State's senior goalkeeper
Ryan Wilson (0-2-0) stopped both shots he faced in the period, including a diving save in the 85th minute that kept the score 1-1.
In overtime, the Cardinals were outshot 3-1 and the Blue Jays made a breakaway opportunity count. In the 97th minute, JD Haaf got past the defense and went one-on-one against Wilson. Haaf shot towards the left side of the net and Wilson dove, but was unable to get enough of the ball to keep it from going into the side of the net as Elizabethtown secured the 2-1 victory.
Wilson made three saves for Plattsburgh State and Del Cid stopped four shots for Elizabethtown.
Elizabethtown held a 14-10 edge in shots in the match, but shots on goal were even at 5-5.
The Cardinals play their first home match of the season when they face Hobart College on Friday, Sept. 6 at 2 p.m., as part of the Best Western Plus Cardinal Classic.
