PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Plattsburgh State Cardinals men's soccer head coach Chris Taylor continues to make an impact beyond the collegiate level, leading Vermont Green FC to a 1-0 victory in the first round of the U.S. Open Cup.
Vermont Green FC, a USL League Two team, took on Portland Hearts of Pine, a professional USL League One squad, in its opening-round matchup on Tuesday night. With the win, Vermont Green advanced in one of the country's most historic and prestigious soccer competitions. The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup features clubs from all levels of American soccer, providing a unique platform for amateur and professional teams alike to compete.
Taylor helped guide the club to an undefeated 11-0-3 regular-season record last year, clinching its first Northeast Division title, capturing the Eastern Conference Championship, and securing its first-ever USL League Two National Championship. That championship run earned Vermont Green FC a place in the U.S. Open Cup. Taylor will enter his ninth season as the Cardinals' head coach this fall.
The victory marks an exciting moment for both Vermont Green FC and the Plattsburgh State community, highlighting the continued success of Cardinals athletics beyond campus.
Vermont Green FC will look to continue its run in the next round of the U.S. Open Cup, with details to be announced.
