2019-20 Schedule
PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – With a young and talented squad, the Plattsburgh State men's track and field team has the potential to climb up the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) standings during the 2020 indoor conference meet and will kick off its season on Saturday, Dec. 7, at the Saints Holiday Relays hosted by St. Lawrence University.
Led by 10th-year head coach
Nick Jones, the Cardinals improved a spot last season at the conference meet, finishing just 14 points back of Buffalo State and Fredonia, who tied for fifth place.
Sprints:
A new-look group will compete in the sprint events for the Cardinals this year, led by three returners from last year's team: senior
Ralph Cordeau (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) and sophomores
Michael Meddings (Massena, N.Y./Massena) and
Connor O'Neil (Dover Plains, N.Y./Dover).
The newcomers for 2019-20 include freshmen
Cameron Aviles (Campbell Hall, N.Y./Washingtonville),
Jared Davidson (Washingtonville, N.Y./Washingtonville),
Cameron Giuliano (Shokan, N.Y./Onteora),
Michael James (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Plattsburgh),
Ryan Keane (Baiting Hollow, N.Y./Riverhead),
Brendyn Marrero (Rock Tavern, N.Y./Washingtonville),
Brexton Montville (Cadyville, N.Y./Saranac),
Marlon Peak Jr. (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Lakeland) and
Erik Sicko (Stillwater, N.Y./Stillwater).
Middle Distance:
Plattsburgh State's most experienced event group is its middle distance runners, which includes three members of last year's distance medley relay that placed second at the SUNYAC Championships: juniors
Luke Groves (Slingerlands, N.Y./Guilderland),
Andrew Horan (Albany, N.Y./Guilderland) and sophomore
Tyler Martin (Saranac Lake, N.Y./Saranac Lake). Groves and Horan also participated on the Cardinals' 4x400-meter relay at the conference meet that placed fourth.
Junior
Arthur Horan (Albany, N.Y./Guilderland) and sophomore
Brian Keach (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore) round out the returners, while freshman
Nicholas Boncore (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport-South Manor) is the lone middle-distance newcomer.
Distance:
The Cardinals boast an eight-person distance crew, which includes four returners in juniors
Timothy Lorenzen (Middletown, N.Y./Pine Bush) and
Brendon VanVlack (Duanesburg, N.Y./Duanesburg) and sophomores
Joseph Chianese (Shoreham, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) and
James Faraci (Troy, N.Y./Troy).
The Cardinals' newcomers of freshmen
Liam Gildea (Washingtonville, N.Y./Washingtonville),
Josh Herman (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster),
Ryan Worobey (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) and
Joe Yusaitis (Stillwater, N.Y./Stillwater) will look to parlay their cross country experience from the fall into the indoor season.
Hurdles:
Sophomore
Jacob Leaper (Scotia, N.Y./Scotia-Glenville) showed great promise during his first year competing for the Cardinals and will look to qualify for and score at the SUNYAC Championships this season. Freshman
Jeremiah von Borstel (Massena, N.Y./Massena) also will compete in the hurdles for Plattsburgh State.
Jumps:
Von Borstel, a newcomer to the team, is the lone Cardinal who is anticipated to regularly compete in the jumps this season.
Throws:
Plattsburgh State boasts a pair of returners to the throws in junior
Michael Ferris (Latham, N.Y./Shaker) and sophomore
Dean Perna (Commack, N.Y./Commack). Freshman
Aidan Tous (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) also will look to gain experience in both the shot put and the weight throw this season.
Multis:
Multi-event veteran and senior
Anthony Ciccarelli (Smithtown, N.Y./Commack) will lead the Cardinals this year in the heptathlon, while freshman
Aryes Garrett (Copiague, N.Y./Walter G. O'Connell Copiague) looks to score points at the conference meet as well.
Schedule:
The Cardinals kick off the season on Saturday, Dec. 7, at the Saints Holiday Relays hosted by St. Lawrence before ringing in the New Year at the Middlebury Winter Classic at Middlebury College on Saturday, Jan. 11. Plattsburgh State competes at the St. Lawrence Invitational hosted by St. Lawrence on Saturday, Jan. 18, before sending a select group of student-athletes to the John Thomas Terrier Classic hosted by Boston University from Friday-Saturday, Jan. 24-25. The remainder of the team will compete at the Middlebury Invitational hosted by Middlebury on Saturday, Jan. 25.
Plattsburgh State will split its squad again the following weekend, with some student-athletes participating in the Pioneer Open hosted by Utica College on Saturday, Feb. 1, and some student-athletes competing at the Ithaca Bomber Invitational hosted by Ithaca College from Saturday-Sunday, Feb. 1-2. On Saturday, Feb. 8, the Cardinals will travel to Utica once again for the Blue and Orange Invitational and Multi. The final split-squad weekend of the year will occur on Friday, Feb. 14, when a portion of the team will compete at the Valentine Invitational hosted by Boston University and another portion will participate in the Gordon Kelly Invitational hosted by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In its final tune-up before the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Championships, Plattsburgh State will compete at the SLU Open hosted by St. Lawrence on Friday, Feb. 21.
The two-day SUNYAC Championship meet will occur from Friday-Saturday, Feb. 28-29, at The College at Brockport, while the All-Atlantic Region Track & Field Conference (AARTFC) Championships will take place from Friday-Saturday, March 6-7, at Nazareth College. The 2020 NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships are slated for Friday-Saturday, March 13-14, at JDL Fast Track in Greensboro, N.C.
