Box Score 2 PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State softball team opened up its home schedule on Wednesday afternoon against RPI, falling to the Engineers by scores of 2-1 and 6-5.
The games were played at South Acres Field due to poor field conditions at the Cardinals' regular home field, Cardinal Park.
GAME 1: RPI 2, Plattsburgh State 1
The first game featured a pitchers' duel between the Engineers' Stephanie Caudle and the Cardinals'
Morgan Anderson.
Plattsburgh State got its run in the second inning. Freshman
Amy Glashoff singled through the left side to start the inning and would advance to second on a wild pitch and third after a sac bunt by freshman
Samantha Railey. With one out, sophomore
Kelsey Gage shot a single to left to plate Glashoff for the game's first run.
The Engineers tied things up in the next half-inning when Devan Puhl doubled in Kacie Herity, who began the inning with an infield single.
Freshman
Kaitlyn Preiss singled and stole second to begin the bottom of the third before stealing third with two outs. The Cornwall, N.Y., product was stranded there, however, as Glashoff struck out to end the inning.
Anderson ran into trouble in the top half of the sixth inning as the Engineers set themselves up with runners on first and second with one out. The Johnsonville, N.Y., native battled her way out of the jam by inducing an infield fly and fielding a grounder hit back to her, keeping the game tied at 1-1.
Plattsburgh State retired the first two Engineers in the top of the seventh, but back-to-back doubles by Morgan Kollmeier and Puhl put the visitors in front, 2-1.
Claude struck out the side in the bottom of the seventh to secure the win. The junior finished with 13 punchouts for the game, only allowing four hits.
Anderson allowed eight hits and struck out five in the complete game effort.
GAME 2: RPI 6, Plattsburgh State 5
Snow intensified as game two progressed. The Cardinals, once again, got on the board first, this time in their first at-bats.
Preiss singled and stole second before sophomore
Dominique Zummo drove her in with her first of four hits in game two.
The Cardinals' starter in game two,
Katie Pitkin only allowed two hits over her first two innings of work before running into trouble in the third. After a walk and sac bunt to start the inning, Kollmeier drove a single over shortstop to tie the game at 1-1.
Caudle, the Engineers' starting pitcher in game one, served as the DH in game two and produced in her second at-bat by doubling down the right field line. That knock gave RPI a 2-1 lead.
Plattsburgh State struck right back in the home third, however, as Zummo doubled to left field to plate
Amanda Tantillo. With Zummo at second and
Jennifer Groat at third with one out, the Cardinals caught a bad break as
Amy Glashoff lined one that RPI's pitcher Victoria Hepworth snagged and threw to third to double-off Groat to put an end to the threat.
The Cardinals re-took the lead in the fifth by scoring a pair of runs, the first coming on a safety squeeze. With runners on second and third, Groat laid down a bunt that scored Preiss, giving Plattsburgh State a 3-2 advantage. Zummo continued with her success at the plate by notching an infield single to make it 4-2.
Two more runners would reach base in the inning, but the Cardinals would leave them stranded.
Pitkin fired a 1-2-3 sixth, but wouldn't make it through the seventh as the Engineers produced a big inning.
The first five RPI batters all reached base safely, by way of a pair of singles and walks to go along with a fielding error to go up 5-4 and knock Pitkin out of the game.
Tabitha Butler would enter the game and strike out her first batter. The Engineers though would then execute a successful double steal of second and home to scratch out another run to go up 6-4, their fourth run of the frame.
Plattsburgh State wouldn't go away quietly, however, as Zummo capped off her four RBI performance by doubling in Groat with one out. The Commack, N.Y., native advanced to third after a groundout.
Zummo would be stranded on third though as
Jackie Decker grounded out to first to end the game.
The Cardinals fall back to .500 at 8-8 while RPI improves to 14-4 with the two victories.
Plattsburgh State will open up SUNYAC play at home on Friday against New Paltz. The doubleheader will take place at South Acres Field and get underway at 3 p.m.
