Box Score CANTON, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's team headed to St. Lawrence Saturday afternoon for its first game of the 2015 North Country Classic. The Cardinals would come up short against the Saints falling 4-1.
The first half saw a total of four shots on goal (3 – St. Lawrence, 1 – Plattsburgh State) as the game remained scoreless for the first 45 minutes.
In the second half the Cardinals would come out and strike first just over one minute into the new frame. Sophomore,
Sarah Haight would find the back of the net for her second goal of the season in as many games.
Haight received a through ball in the box from fellow sophomore Madeleine Saccocio. The East Meredith, N.Y., native would make one touch before shooting low on Saints goalie Kelsey West.
St. Lawrence would score their first of three goals in a six minute span just two minutes after the Cardinals tally.
The Saints first goal came on a penalty kick before Kaleigh White would beat the Cardinals defense and send her shot by Cardinals goalkeeper
Nichole Gibson.
The lead would balloon to 3-1 on a St. Lawrence corner kick. Emily DePoy sent the ball into box where Cardinal goalie Gibson would get a hand on it. The ball would deflect right to Rachel Muskin stationed inside the six yard box. Muskin then volleyed the ball out of the air into the open net.
Katie Stames would make it 4-1 St. Lawrence when she received a pass from Katelyn Daley. Daley made a run up the right side of the field as her Stames were both in alone on the goalie. Daley would send a cross inside the box right in front of the goal mouths setting up Stames for an easy goal.
The Saints outshot the Cardinals 20-4 including 8-2 on goal. St. Lawrence also owned a 6-0 advantage on corner kicks.
Gibson finished the evening with four saves while Saints goalie West had one.
Plattsburgh State falls to 1-1-0 on the season as they will head to Clarkson on Sunday at 2 p.m. to wrap the North Country Classic. The Cardinals defeated Clarkson last season 3-0.
