Women's Soccer Dominates Canton, Extends Unbeaten SUNYAC Start to Five Games

CANTON, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's soccer team continued its strong start to State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play, earning a dominant 7-0 road victory over SUNY Canton to remain unbeaten through its first five conference games for the first time since the 2017 season.

The Cardinals entered the matchup following a 3-0 victory over Oswego and carried that momentum into Canton, where they controlled the contest from start to finish, outshooting the Kangaroos 32-0 and earning 14 corner kicks.

Plattsburgh opened the scoring in the 10th minute when Kyra Whitman (Stafford, Texas/Fort Bend Christian Academy) found the back of the net for her fourth goal of the season. The Cardinals doubled their advantage in the 21st minute as senior Sydney Myers (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Saranac) finished a pass from senior Lilley Keyser (Keeseville, N.Y./AuSable Valley), sending Plattsburgh into halftime with a 2-0 lead.

The Cardinals wasted little time extending their advantage after the break, scoring twice in the opening four minutes of the second half. Sophomore Ireland McGowan (Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward Melville) made it 3-0 in the 48th minute, with sophomore Mariah Nowicki (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa) and sophomore Leah Warren (Lisbon, N.Y./Lisbon) credited with assists. Just 34 seconds later, Myers scored her second goal of the afternoon off assists from first-year Lia Parker (Cadyville, N.Y./Saranac) and junior Amy Crowley (Wallkill, N.Y./Wallkill) to put Plattsburgh firmly in control.

Myers completed her hat trick in the 51st minute, finding the net from a free kick more than 20 yards out to give the Cardinals a 5-0 advantage. Junior Bailee Lafountain (Mooers Forks, N.Y./Northeastern Clinton) added to the lead in the 57th minute, scoring her sixth goal of the season on a strike from distance off a pass from sophomore Alana DeLaCruz (Albany, N.Y./Shaker). First-year Brynn Hite (Rouses Point, N.Y./Northeastern Clinton) capped the scoring in the 88th minute, finishing a pass from first-year Emily Bednarczyk (Ballston Spa, N.Y.) to secure the 7-0 victory.

Myers led the offensive effort with three goals, while six different Cardinals found the back of the net. Plattsburgh's defensive unit limited Canton to zero shots and zero corner kicks, while the Cardinals put 17 of their 32 shots on goal.

With the victory, Plattsburgh improves to 7-2-4 overall and 4-0-1 in SUNYAC play, extending its unbeaten start to conference action to five games. The Cardinals' seven-goal performance marks the team's highest single-game scoring total since the 2021 season.

Plattsburgh returns home on Saturday to host Morrisville for Senior Day as the Cardinals continue their SUNYAC schedule.
