Box Score POTSDAM, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's soccer team began State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play Saturday afternoon against North Country rivals Potsdam, defeating the Bears 1-0 in double overtime.
In the first 45 minutes neither team were able to find the back of the net but each team had their chances.
Potsdam had a promising attack when Erin McClusky in the 18
th minute was on top of the six yard box but she sent her shot high over the goal.
Plattsburgh State had several shots on goal but Potsdam goalkeeper Bri Thibeau was able control everything.
Cardinals' Caitlin Gagen had a prime chance in the 37
th minute on the right side of the box. She sent her shot low and towards the far post but Thibeau was just able to get a foot on it to make the save.
The second half was more of the same as the first half as Plattsburgh State and Potsdam couldn't break the scoreless tie.
With the game still tied in the 55
th minute the Bears were back on the attack. Brooke Falsion split two Plattsburgh State defenders inside the box before taking a shot form eight yards out. Cardinals' goalie,
Nichole Gibson came out to cut the angle off and make a key save.
With the Cardinals in double overtime for the second time in as many games, the outcome would be the same as Plattsburgh State was able to net a late game-winner for the second-straight time.
With a team-high three shots on goal, Gagen was the hero this time as she collected a miss played ball between a Potsdam defender and the goalkeeper.
Bears' goalie Thibeau was charging out to grab the ball but she collided with a teammate and the ball kicked out to Gagen on the right side of the box. The East Syracuse, N.Y. native would just take one touch and tap the ball into the empty net for the game-winner in the 103
rd minute.
Potsdam finished the afternoon outshooting the Cardinals 15-12. Gibson finished with six saves for her fourth shutout of the season. Thibeau collected five saves in the losing effort.
Plattsburgh State now finds themselves on a five-game win-streak and sit 6-2-1 and 1-0-0 in the SUNYAC. Potsdam sees its school record six-game win-streak snapped as they fall to 7-2-0 and 0-1-0 in the SUNYAC.
The Cardinals will go for their sixth-straight win on the road against SUNYAC foe Cortland on Friday at 3 p.m.
