CANTON, N.Y. — The Plattsburgh State women's soccer team battled St. Lawrence University to a 1-1 draw on Saturday afternoon, earning a point on the road after entering the contest looking to bounce back from its first loss of the season.
The Cardinals and Saints played to a scoreless opening half, with both teams recording seven shots. Junior goalkeeper Desiree DuBois (Champlain, N.Y./Northeastern Clinton Central) made three saves in the opening half to keep St. Lawrence off the scoreboard.
St. Lawrence broke through early in the second half, as Barrett Freeman scored at 49:34 to give the Saints a 1-0 advantage. Kiki D'Anza assisted on the goal. The Cardinals responded less than five minutes later. At 54:13, sophomore defender Ireland McGowan (Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward Melville) found the back of the net for her first goal of the season, leveling the match at 1-1. Sophomore midfielder Addison Shultis (Duanesburg, N.Y./Schalmont) provided the assist.
Neither team was able to find a go-ahead goal over the final 35 minutes as the Cardinals and Saints settled for the draw. Plattsburgh State finished with 13 shots, including six on goal, while St. Lawrence registered 15 shots and seven shots on target.
With the tie, the Cardinals move to 2-1-2 on the season and will be back in action Wednesday on the road when they take on VTSU-Johnson.
