Cardinals Erupt for Five Goals in Season Opener at Keene State

Senior, Cassidy Clavet scored twice for the Cardinals in their 5-2 victory over Keene State Tuesday night.
Box Score KEENE, N.H. - In its 2015 season opener, the Plattsburgh State women's soccer team offensively already looks in midseason form as the Cardinals hung a five spot on Keene State in a 5-2 victory Tuesday night.

The Owls of Keene State would strike first as Kali Santino found the back of the net in the 19th minute on a penalty kick.

Owl's, Brittany Tolla was brought down in the box when Plattsburgh State's goalkeeper Nichole Gibson charged out making contact with the forward.

Plattsburgh State's senior captain, Cassidy Clavet would answer in the 24th minute to even the score at 1-1. Clavet capitalized on a failed clear attempt before beating Keene State goalie Danielle Warhall.

The second half would produce the drama as the first of three-straight Cardinal sophomores would find the back of the net.

Madeline Saccocio would give the Cardinals a 2-1 advantage in the 62nd minute.

However, the Owls wouldn't go down quietly striking for an equalizer of their own in the 72nd minute. Taylor Farland would receive a through ball before slipping her shot through Gibson's arms knotting the game at 2-2.

The Cardinals would stay resilient though, scoring just a mere 15 seconds later.

Sophomore, Sarah Haight would propel the Cardinals back to lead on a rip from 20 yards out making it 3-2.

Plattsburgh State would not relinquish the lead for the rest of the night as Caitlin Gagen would provide an insurance goal in the 80th minute to make it 4-2.

Clavet would put the final touches on the 5-2 game when she found the back of the net for the second time with just 36 seconds remaining.

Gibson would finish the evening with five saves on seven shots for the Cardinals while her counterpart Warhall would allow five goals on nine shots.

The Cardinals will look to continue the early success this weekend when they battle North Country rivals St. Lawrence and Clarkson on Saturday and Sunday respectively.
