Box Score 2 POTSDAM, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State softball team traveled on Tuesday to SUNY Potsdam to take on the Bears collecting two wins to the finals of 3-1 and 12-4 in five innings.
In the first game the Cardinals got a gem of performance from junior pitcher
Morgan Anderson.
The Johnsonville, N.Y., product pitched all seven innings only allowing one run and three hits while striking out eight.
SUNY Potsdam would strike first to take a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth when Lauren Brace would homer to left field.
The Cardinals would take advantage of three errors in the top of the sixth scoring three runs gaining the lead that they would not relinquish.
Lauren Graves singled up the middle driving in
Evelyn Vicencio before Nicole Chairello reached on an error that scored
Nicole Cast to make it 3-1.
SUNY Potsdam pitcher Meghan Dougherty went six innings allowing zero earned runs and striking out three in a losing effort.
In the second game Plattsburgh State jumped out to a 2-0 lead when
Dominique Zummo stole home and Vicencio scored on a wild pitched.
The Cardinals would add to their lead scoring three more in the top of the second, again taking advantage of more SUNY Potsdam errors.
In the second Zummo tripled scoring
Amanda Tantillo before tacking one two more by errors.
The Bears would claw back in the bottom of the third cutting the Cardinals lead to 5-2.
With the base loaded Katie Marsman singled up the middle driving in Chelsea Streeter and Noelle Rufa.
Plattsburgh State would explode for six runs in the top of the fifth after a pair of walks and an error to load the bases.
Hope VanBrocklin would score on a wild pitch right before the Cardinal's bats would heat up for four-straight hits including three triples.
First was Chairello doubling to left center plating
Kelsey Gage.
Next Tantillo would have a two RBI single to left center scoring
Lauren Graves and Chairello.
Back-to-back doubles by Zummo and
Brittany Marshall would score three more runs, ballooning the Cardinal lead to 11-2. Marshall would later score to make it 12-2 on a
Nicole Cast grounder.
Having to score three runs in the bottom of the fifth to extend the game, SUNY Potsdam would only manage two ending the game in five innings due to the run rule.
Jordan Ott singled and later scored on a Marsman double.
Very next batter Lauren Brace would double to bring in Marsman to make it 12-4 Plattsburgh State.
Cardinal's pitcher
Taylor Smith pitched all five innings allowing four runs and striking out two. Counterpart Jaime Hoskins started the game for SUNY Potsdam allowing three earned in 1 2/3 innings before Dougherty and Carina Chirinko would come on in relief.
With the two wins Plattsburgh State is now 8-18 (3-9) as they head to Geneseo and Brockport of a pair of SUNYAC doubleheaders on Friday and Saturday.
