Box Score 2 TROY, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State softball team got back to the diamond on Wednesday splitting a pair of eight inning duels after not playing since its Florida trip eleven days ago.
The Cardinals would drop the first game 2-1 in eight innings before rebounding to win their own eight inning battle 3-2.
In the first game both teams were locked up in a real pitchers duel as neither team could manufacture a run through the first six and half innings.
It was not till the bottom of sixth when the Engineers would finally get to Cardinals starting pitcher
Morgan Anderson. RPI's Taylor Ten Eyck would lead-off the inning with a double ending Anderson's afternoon.
Taylor Smith would come on in relief to face Jena Servidone who would tally a double of her own driving in Ten Eyck.
Down to their last three outs the Cardinals would level the score at 1-1 in the top of the seventh on a
Hope VanBrocklin double to left center driving in Jacquelyn Decker.
After forcing extra innings the Cardinals had a chance to take a 2-1 lead as
Nicole Chiarello was on third base with no one out. However, RPI would get out the jam after doubling up Chiarello trying to tag up on a fly ball to center field.
The Engineers would take the plate in the home half of the eighth to claim a 2-1 win on a Ten Eyck walk-off single up the middle.
Ten Eyck would knock in Morgan Kollmeier from third base after a Danielle Balestrini sac bunt.
Anderson went five innings picking up the loss after only allowing one earned run and two hits. RPI pitcher Kristina Weltzin went the distance only allowing one run and striking out eight batters.
The second game would open the scoring a little quicker as the Cardinals would strike first in the third inning.
Brittany Marshall would single to left scoring Chiarello from second base.
RPI would score both of its runs with one swing of the bat. Ten Eyck struck a two run home run over the left center fence in the bottom of the fourth to grab a 2-1 lead.
More seventh inning drama from the Cardinals would extend the game for the second-straight time. Marshall would drive in her second run of the game with another single to center tying the game at 2-2.
In the top of the eighth the Cardinals would take the advantage of their scoring chance on a Decker double to center field scoring Vicencio to secure the Cardinals 3-2 victory in extra innings.
Taylor Smith picked up the win for the Cardinals after coming in relief for Kristine Fisher in the middle of the fourth inning. Smith only allowed two hits and one walk in 4.2 innings of work. Engineers' pitcher Stephanie Caudle pitched all eight innings for RPI giving up nine hits and striking-out seven.
Plattsburgh State moves to 6-10 on the season and will return to action in a pair of pivotal SUNYAC doubleheaders this weekend against Buffalo State and Fredonia.
