Box Score 2 CLERMONT, Fla. – Offense was hard to come by for the Plattsburgh State softball team on Wednesday evening as the Cardinals recorded just eight hits in a pair of setbacks to Benedictine and Western New England University at the NTC Complex.
With the losses, the Cardinals fall to 2-6.
GAME ONE: Benedictine 8 (4-5), Plattsburgh State 2 (2-5)It didn't take long for the Eagles to shift their offense into high gear as they amassed six runs on six hits in the top of the second frame. A Plattsburgh State error proved costly as four unearned runs would come around to score before the inning came to a close.
Plattsburgh State responded with two scores of its own in the bottom of the second. Jacqueline Decker began the Cardinals' three-hit inning with a triple before being plated with an
Amanda Tantillo sacrifice fly to make the score 6-1.
Hope Van Brocklin cut the Plattsburgh State deficit to just four when her two-out RBI single plated
Nicole Cast.
The Eagles, though, were able to regain their six-run lead by plating one run each in the third and the fourth.
In all, the Cardinals recorded five hits with two of them coming off the bat of Decker. Four Plattsburgh State errors, though, led to a total of five unearned runs by Benedictine.
Lauren Graves took the loss as she worked just 1.1 innings and gave up five runs on four hits. Melissa Guzior earned the win for the Eagles by slinging six innings of five-hit ball with a pair of strikeouts.
Melissa Stoch led the Benedictine offense with a 3-for-3 day at the plate and a pair of RBIs. The Eagles totaled 12 hits during the non-conference affair.
GAME TWO: Western New England Univ. 1 (4-4), Plattsburgh State 0 (2-6)In a game with only seven combined hits, it was the Golden Bears who produced just enough offense to scratch out the 1-0 triumph.
Brittany Marshall went 2-for-3 with a stolen base and represented the only Plattsburgh State baserunner to make it past first base in the pitcher's duel.
Morgan Anderson stepped into the circle for the Cardinals and began matching zeroes instantly with the Golden Bears' starter Heidi Greiger. Anderson, a junior, pitched a complete game and fanned five while her counterpart had a complete-game performance of her own with a pair of K's.
The only time Anderson ran into trouble was in the sixth inning as the Golden Bears began their half of the frame with three hits to load up the bases.
After a pair of plays at the plate produced the first two outs of the frame, the bases remained loaded for McKenzie Pezze who took the third and most important base on balls of the game for Western New England. Pezze received credit for the game-winning RBI.
Plattsburgh State will return to the diamond tomorrow at 11 a.m. for a tilt with Lesley University before facing off against Macalaster College at 1 p.m.
