Box Score 2 CLERMONT, Fla. – State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play started a little early for the Plattsburgh State softball team as the Cardinals split a two-game set with Oswego State at the NTC Complex on Sunday morning.
Senior Brittany Marshall had a big game at the plate and helped the Cardinals score a 5-0 win over their conference rivals in game two after Plattsburgh State suffered an 8-4 setback in the first tilt. The Cardinals record now stands at 2-2 and 1-1 in conference play while the Lakers own a 1-3 mark and a 1-1 SUNYAC record.
GAME ONE: Oswego State 8, Plattsburgh State 4Oswego State got to Plattsburgh State starter Kristin Fisher early on when Ashley Lyman launched a two-out, three-run long ball out of the part, giving the Lakers a 3-0 lead after the first half inning.
Runs were tough to produce for the Cardinals, who faced a 7-0 deficit before they were able to plate their first SUNYAC score of 2015. The Lakers added two in the third and an additional pair in the fourth before Kelsey Gage's RBI groundout in the top of the fifth made it a 7-1 ball game.
One RBI each from Brittany Marshall and Jacqueline Decker in the sixth pulled the Cardinals within four, 7-3, but the Lakers added one final run in the top of the seventh to pull away for good.
Marshall went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs and Fisher suffered the pitching loss, going three innings and surrendering five runs.
GAME TWO: Plattsburgh State 5, Oswego State 0Morgan Anderson and Kristen Fisher each took their turn in the circle keeping the Lakers' bats at bay in the second tilt of the morning between the two SUNYAC rivals.
Anderson, a junior, took the ball for the first two innings and faced seven batters, registering one strikeout during that span. One of the two Plattsburgh State seniors, Fisher got the call in innings three through seven and punched out four Oswego State batters to keep the shutout intact. The pair limited the Lakers to just a trio of hits.
Marshall crossed home plate in the top of the first, getting on base with a one-out double before coming around to score on a passed ball.
The senior's offensive punch wasn't limited to a double, as the Malone, N.Y., bashed her first home run of the season in the bottom of the third to stake the Cardinals to a 2-0 lead.
Three more runs would come around to score in the bottom of the sixth. Dominique Zummo provided two of them with a double while Hope Van Brocklin added one more by way of an RBI single.
Alexandria Connelly took the loss for the Lakers, going four innings in the circle.
Monday will see the Cardinals take part in two more games at the NTC Complex. First up is an 11 a.m., meeting with Western Connecticut State before Plattsburgh State tangles with NESCAC rival Amherst College at 1 p.m.
