Cardinals Top Knights 2-0

Nichole Gibson made three saves en route to her sixth shutout of the season on Friday against Geneseo.
Box Score PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's soccer team notched its second-straight victory with a 2-0 win over Geneseo Friday afternoon.

Both teams fought evenly through the opening half as the Cardinals had a slight 6-5 shot advantage at the break.

Despite the shot edge, Geneseo had the best scoring opportunity in the 23rd minute when a Knight shooter struck a ball on frame. Plattsburgh State goalie Nichole Gibson was up to the task, making a diving save to keep the game knotted at 0-0.

It took to the 78th minute for a team to break the scoring drought, when the Cardinals' Sarah Haight received a through ball from Ashlie Guinness, springing her one-on-one with the goalkeeper. Haight shot low under the Geneseo goalie Juliana Panepento into the left corner of the net to make it 1-0.

Moments later in the 81st minute, the Cardinals would make it 2-0 on another well placed through ball. Anissa Hartmann sent a pass splitting the middle of the Geneseo defense connecting with Devin McMahon in the middle of the box. McMahon made one touch before beating Panepento low again.

The Cardinals finished the day with a 14-8 shot advantage and a 6-4 corner kick edge.

With the win Plattsburgh State moves to 11-5-1 (5-3-0 SUNYAC). The victory puts them in a tie with Geneseo in the SUNYAC standings who are also 5-3-0 in conference and 11-4-1 overall. Plattsburgh State clinched either third or fourth in the SUNYAC standings which means they will be hosting a SUNYAC quarterfinal game next weekend.

The Cardinals will finish their regular season against Brockport on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m., as it will mark senior day for eight Cardinals.
