Twelve Cardinals Net Points in 73-41 Memorial Hall Massacre of Fredonia State

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – A men's basketball game was allegedly supposed to take place between Plattsburgh State and Fredonia State on Saturday afternoon.

Only one of those teams, though, came to play and it sure wasn't the Blue Devils.

Senior Jordan Moody dropped in a game-high 18 points and the Cardinals held Fredonia State to just 13 first-half markers before going on to wipe out the Blue Devils 73-41 in Memorial Hall on Saturday afternoon.

Two other seniors – Reggie Williams and Shamoy McIntosh – finished with 10 points for the Cardinals who upped their record to 13-5 and 8-3 in conference confrontations. With the win, Plattsburgh State swept a Friday/Saturday SUNYAC home series for the first time this season.

In addition to the lopsided final margin, the final box score displayed any number of out-of-whack figures. Plattsburgh State converted the 19 Fredonia State (2-15, 1-11 SUNYAC) turnovers into 29 points and held their SUNYAC enemies to a pathetic 5-for-27 (18.5-percent) showing from the field in the first 20 minutes of action.

Twelve of the 16 Cardinals who logged minutes in the blowout figured into the scoring while Williams and junior Kyle Richardson each finished with a game-high nine rebounds to their credit. That pair of student-athletes helped Plattsburgh State own a 52-43 rebounding edge in the one-sided roundball skirmish.

Junior Edward Correa gave his basketball brigade a lead it would never give up when his first and only downtown swish of the game put Plattsburgh State on top 3-0 just 37 seconds in. Fredonia State's Ian Helps was the recipient of a friendly roll on his mid-range jumper which made it a 3-2 ball game just 20 seconds later, but that was the only threat the Blue Devils posed.

Things were more or less in the books just 11:53 into the game as the Cardinals scored at will in a merciless fashion, building up a 31-6 lead with 8:07 remaining in the initial 20-minute half. Seven players pumped in point for the home team through the course of its opening salvo. Xavier Thomas once again provided a memorable highlight by skying to the rim on a back-door alley-oop before bringing the thunder with a two-handed dunk.

Before the opening period was in the books, the Cardinals upped their lead to as many as 29 points when Williams' layup with 37 ticks to go made the score 42-13.

It looked as though the Cardinals' lead would never cease to grown, as a personal 8-1 run by Moody in the first 5:06 of the deciding half pushed the Plattsburgh State edge to 38 – 56-18.

With the outcome of the game no longer in question, head coach Tom Curle made use of his substitutions in a rather liberal fashion. An ever-changing combination which featured the likes of Zack Coleman, Vaughn Dweck, Tyler Coppin-Carter, Majestic Grigg, Owen Mitchell, Tim Smith and Gary Tibbs was used by the Cardinals for the better part of the final frame.

Senior Mike Mitchell dished out a game-high five assists while Williams, Richardson and Owen Mitchell each had a pair of blocked shots.

Helps was the lone bright spot for the Blue Devils as he finished with 10 points, six rebounds and a game-high three rejections.

Since the vast majority of their home schedule is now in the books, the Cardinals will now embark on a six-game road trip which will encompass much of the month of February. Plattsburgh State's five-game excursion will begin with a jaunt to Oneonta State next Friday with the Cardinals hoping to avenge a 2014 Memorial Hall overtime setback to the Red Dragons. Tip-off is slated for 5:30 p.m.
