Laurent Launches Cardinals Back into Win Column During 2-0 Triumph at Norwich

Freshman Nicholas Laurent (1G, 1A) amassed three points during the Cardinals' Wednesday night win.
Box Score NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Heading into their first road game of the season on Wednesday night, the Cardinals had seen five of their first six points on the season come from underclassmen.

That point-producing trend continued for the youngsters of Plattsburgh State, as freshman forward Nicholas Laurent netted the first three points of his collegiate career to lead the Cardinals to a 2-0 triumph over Norwich on Sabine Field at Haynes Family Stadium.

Keeping constant pressure on the Cadets' back line – as well as netminder Christian Hallstrom (2-1) - the Cardinals rattled off some 28 shots and got back over the .500 mark by raising their record to 2-1. The Cadets (2-1), meanwhile, attempted just nine shots in their first setback of the 2014 campaign.

The Cardinals wasted no time in making offensive excursions into enemy territory, racking up seven total shots before the Cadets were able to register their first of the night. After multiple scoring attempts, Plattsburgh State finally broke through thanks to Laurent.

After setting up shop near the end line, the New City, N.Y., product sent a sharp pass to sophomore Alexis Archilla who was stationed at the six-yard box. Seconds later, a one-touch tally off the foot of the Warwick, N.Y., product put the Cardinals up 1-0 in the 22nd minute of action.

Norwich, however, was definitely not lacking in chances to net the equalizer. Jacob Zimmerman was on the receiving end of a well-placed cross from Pedro Rodriguez, but his resulting shot would up going wide to the right.

Mitchell Jordon (2-1) made one of his two saves on the night in the late stages of the first half when Chris Bristol launched a header at the junior off of a corner kick.
Plattsburgh State had a number of opportunities to increase its lead before the final frame was in the books. Senior Nick Parrella found himself on a breakaway in the 39th minute, but saw his shot sail high of Hallstrom and the Cadets' net.

Laurent pulled out some soccer-related theatrics just moments later with a show-stopping bicycle kick which was deflected off the crossbar after being touched by Hallstrom.

Just shy of 15 minutes into the deciding stanza, Laurent gave the Cardinals the insurance score they were seeking. Engaged in a one-on-one battle with a Norwich defender, Laurent swindled the ball and blasted an 18-yard shot past Hallstrom to provide the final tally.

The Cadets had one final opportunity to slice into the Cardinals' lead, but Zimmerman's strong shot bounced harmlessly off the Plattsburgh State crossbar.

Junior Fabian Chaparro led the offensive charge for the Cardinals, taking five shots – three of which challenged Hallstrom. Archilla finished the night with four shots while Laurent and Parrella each attempted three.

Plattsburgh State will put the finishing touches on its two-game, non-conference road swing when the Cardinals make the trip to Geneva, N.Y., on Saturday to face off against Hobart. The match between the Cardinals and Statesmen (1-1) is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
