Plattsburgh State Battles Skidmore to 2-2 Draw

Alexis Archilla scored his SUNYAC-leading eighth goal of the season on Saturday.
Box Score SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State men's soccer team had its opportunities to earn a road win, but instead came away with a 2-2 tie against Skidmore at Wachenheim Field on Saturday evening.

With their first draw of the season, the Cardinals move to 5-2-1 while Skidmore sends its 2014 record to 4-3-1.

The Thoroughbreds started the scoring when Adam Beek's initial strike on goal was blocked by a charging Mitchell Jordan. Jordan collided with another Plattsburgh State defender as the ball pinballed around before bouncing forward over him. Beek gathered the ball and shot it into the open net scoring his fifth goal of the season.

The Cardinals rallied quickly when Chris Bowden capitalized on Skidmore failed clearance. The Thoroughbreds turned the ball over inside their own box and Bowden was there to fire the ball into the net from 12 yards away.

Skidmore opened the second frame with another score to regain the lead. This time, the go-ahead strike came off a deflection from a corner kick. Todd Jensen drilled a low liner through a swarm of players past a diving Jordan to put the home squad up 2-1.

Plattsburgh State kept its composure and fought back to tie the game again from the boot of Alexis Archilla. Nate Economou delivered a pass to Archilla on the top of the right box and the Warwick, N.Y., product buried one top shelf over the keeper.

Fabian Chaparro almost won the game for the Cardinals in dramatic fashion, but his blast from 25 yards out in the final seconds of the last overtime period was stopped by Skidmore netminder Eli Kisselbach.

The Cardinals held a 16-12 edge in shots, including a 5-0 advantage in overtime. Mitchell Jordan finished the game with three saves while Kisselbach made six saves.

Plattsburgh State returns to action Tuesday to play North Country rival St. Lawrence at 7 p.m. at the Plattsburgh High School soccer field.
