Cardinals Cruise Past Union, 3-0

Sophomore Alexis Archilla posted two goals to lead the Cardinals to a 3-0 win on Saturday afternoon.
Box Score PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. - On a rainy Saturday afternoon the Plattsburgh State men's soccer team topped Union 3-0 to earn its second straight win and move to 4-2-0 on the season.

The Cardinals offense has been lead all year by sophomore Alexis Archilla and Saturday was no different. The Warwick N.Y. native scored two goals for the second straight game giving him a four goal, eight point week.

Archilla's first goal come off an Ian Spear corner kick in the 42nd minute that led to a scrum in front of the net. Senior Nick Parrella popped the ball up with his left foot before finding Archilla's shoulder and into the net, giving the Cardinals lead.

In the following minute after the score Plattsburgh State had a grade-A chance to score. Archilla was one-on-one with the goalie on top of the box. Archilla chipped the ball over the goalkeeper towards the open net.

Parrella was streaking in on the right side past the defense as the ball appeared to be heading wide, the senior one-timed it from point-blank unfortunately sending it off the right post. The Cardinals would settle for a 1-0 lead going into halftime.

It wasn't until the 61st minute that the Cardinals tallied another goal courtesy of an Ethan Votraw penalty kick.

The penalty kick was setup by a beautiful pass from Fabian Chaparro who sent the ball over the defense on the left side connecting with a streaking Chris Bowden who had just been subbed in the minute prior. Bowden's fresh legs beat the defense and collected the ball in the box making a couple touches before eventually being taken down by a Union defenseman.

Six minutes later Archilla would apply the dagger with his second goal of the game. Chaparro again sliced the defense with another crisp pass only this time to Archilla. The sophomore then made one touch moving the ball to his left foot before burying a clinical strike past the keeper far post.

Union suffers its third consecutive loss and now finds itself 2-3 after a 2-0 start.

Union's best chance came in the 69th minute when Sam Hunter took a shot from the middle of the 18 yard box. Junior goalkeeper Mitchell Jordan made a diving save to his left to keep the clean sheet for Plattsburgh State.

Jordan ended the day with two saves for the Cardinals as Union goalkeeper Ryan Carter finished with one.

The Cardinals outshot the Dutchmen 9-5 despite having a 4-3 disadvantage in corner kicks.

Plattsburgh State continues its home stand this Wednesday when they host a familiar face in former Cardinal star Chris Taylor who is in his first season as head coach of the Clarkson Golden Knights. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at the Plattsburgh HS Soccer Field.
