Six Cardinals Collect Points as Plattsburgh State Rips Castleton 4-1

Alexis Archilla increased his 2014 goal total to four with a pair of scores against the Spartans.
Box Score PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – A home game against Castleton State was exactly what the Plattsburgh State men's soccer team needed in order to return to the win column.

Alexis Archilla pumped in a pair of second-half goals – one of which came by way of an impressive bicycle kick – to help the Cardinals take a 4-1 decision from the Spartans at the Plattsburgh High School soccer field on Wednesday night.

With the win, Plattsburgh State improves its 2014 mark to 3-2 while Castleton State remains firmly entrenched in the loss column at 0-4. Since Chris Waterbury took over as the Cardinals' head coach in 1985, Plattsburgh State has gone 21-0-1 against the Spartans. Castleton State hasn't defeated the Cardinals in a men's soccer contest since the 1966 season.

Archilla led the offensive charge for the Cardinals, firing five of the team's 21 shots while the Spartans attempted just nine through the course of the one-sided affair.

Fewer than 10 minutes had elapsed before Plattsburgh State took a lead it wouldn't relinquish. On the first of five corner kicks on the night by the Cardinals, junior midfielder Nelson Vetter punched a long lob to the far side of the Castleton State net. Leaping up and getting his head on it at the 8:38 mark was sophomore defender Nick Economou who made it 1-0 when his first goal of the season beat Castleton State keeper Dan Palker in the top corner of the net.

For the remainder of the first stanza the Cardinals were able to dictate the pace, but the scrappy squadron of Spartans had a number of opportunities to net the equalizer. Plattsburgh State netminder Mitchell Jordon saved two shots in the first 45 minutes of action before the Cardinals struck for the game-winner.

With 1:39 to go in the opening frame, Shaq Jackson-Lee raced up the field and sent a long pass up to Chris Bowden. After the ball bounced off the head of a Castleton State defender, Bowden settled the ball down and bent a blast past Palker which made matters 2-0. The score was Bowden's first of his sophomore campaign and Jackson-Lee picked up his first assist of the season.

Needing an additional dose of scoring punch to really put the game out of reach in the second half, the Cardinals turned to Archilla who was more than happy to provide it. A little over five minutes into the deciding frame, the Warwick, N.Y., product imposed his will on a Castleton State defender deep in the Spartan zone.

After swindling the ball, the sophomore found himself one-on-one with Palker and chipped his third goal of the season past the goalie.

At the 54:44 mark, Archilla found himself among a gang of Plattsburgh State offensive players stationed deep in the Spartans' box. A bouncing ball found its way to the foot of senior Nick Parrella who touched it to Archilla. The sophomore put the wraps on the Cardinals' scoring barrage with a splendid bicycle kick for his second goal of the evening.

With the game well in hand, Jordon gave up his post between the Plattsburgh State pipes and saw John Toper station himself there for the final 17:25. Castleton State broke up the Cardinals' shutout bid when Blake Hart put a shot past Toper in the 86th minute.

By the time all was said and done, six different Cardinals had amassed points on the night. Jordon moved to 3-2 by making three saves while Palker (0-4) took the loss despite making six stops.

On Saturday afternoon, the Cardinals will play the middle game of their three-game home stand. A non-conference battle with Union is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Plattsburgh High School.
