Box Score 2 PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State softball team struggled at the plate while Oneonta combined for 19 runs as the Cardinals suffered a pair of losses Saturday afternoon by scores of 10-0 and 9-1 in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) doubleheader at South Acres Park.
Game One: Oneonta 10, Plattsburgh State 0 (5 inn.) The Red Dragons relied on the long ball in the first game with all 10 runs coming off three swings. Traci Lichtenstein and Jaime Whittam each went 3-for-4 with two runs scored while Lichtenstein hit two home runs to finish game one with seven RBIs.
After two scoreless innings, Whittam led off the top of the third with a single up the middle before stealing second and advancing to third on a passed ball. A two-out walk to Brianna Rivera set up a double steal that allowed Whittam to score the Red Dragons' first run. With Rivera on second, Nicole Marzillo stepped to the plate and sent the ball over the center field fence to give Oneonta a 3-0 lead.
Oneonta opened the fourth inning with three straight singles before the Cardinals brought in Kristin Fisher to relieve starter Morgan Anderson. Fisher got two quick outs as the first batter she faced flied out to right before Kristine Gay threw out Katie O'Gorman at the plate but Lichtenstein stepped in and hit a three-run home run to extend the Red Dragons' lead to 6-0.
With the bases loaded and two outs, Lichtenstein struck again in the top of the fifth with a grand slam to clear the bases and make it a 10-0 game.
Gay and Kayla Rabideau each singled as Oneonta rookie Sabrina DeAngelis held the Cardinals to two hits. DeAngelis walked one and struck out two in the complete-game shutout.
Anderson was hit with the loss, allowing five runs on nine hits in three innings of work. Fisher was tagged for four hits and five runs, two of which were earned, in two innings of relief.
Game Two: Oneonta 9, Plattsburgh State 1 (5 inn.) Game two was cruising along as the two teams were scoreless through three innings but the wheels fell off in the fourth as Oneonta plated nine runs on nine hits en route to a 9-1 win in five innings over the Cardinals.
Marzillo and Marlene Cuevas hit back-to-back doubles in the top of fourth to get Oneonta's offense going. Cuevas scored on a passed ball to give Oneonta a 2-0 lead before an RBI double by Nichole Paolino signaled the end of Sam Moss' day. Anderson came in to relieve Moss, but was unable to minimize the damage as Whittam reached on an error and Jenn Brocco doubled to left center to bring in two more runs. The Red Dragons crossed the plate four more times in the inning before Anderson got O'Gorman to pop out to the shortstop to end the inning.
Nicole Chiarello broke up Oneonta's no-hit bid in the bottom of the fourth with a double to right center and Brittany Marshall followed with an infield single to put runners on the corners. Chiarello scored on a fielder's choice, but Oneonta's Katie O'Flynn retired the next two batters to hold the Cardinals to one run.
Brocco and Marzillo each had three hits for Oneonta in game two while Brocco and Cuevas contributed two RBIs apiece.
Moss took the loss after surrendering five runs on seven hits in 3.1 innings. Moss issued one walk and struck out one. Anderson gave up two earned runs and six hits in 1.2 innings of work out of the bullpen.
DeAngelis earned the win to improve to 11-5 with three perfect innings for Oneonta. O'Flynn allowed one run on two hits in one inning while Rachel Hitt threw a scoreless inning of relief in the fifth.
The Cardinals dropped to 6-20 overall and 3-7 in the SUNYAC. The Red Dragons move to 20-9 on the year and 10-3 in league play.
Plattsburgh State looks to rebound from the weekend with a non-conference doubleheader at St. Lawrence on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
