Box Score 2 TROY, N.Y. – Senior Brianna Clarke drove in a pair of runs to help the Plattsburgh State softball team split a non-conference doubleheader with Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) Wednesday afternoon at Doris Robison Field. After falling, 4-2, in game one and taking game two by a score of 2-1, the Cardinals move to 6-16 overall while the Engineers are 13-9.
Game One: RPI 4, Plattsburgh State 2 In game one, Plattsburgh State squandered a 2-0 lead as RPI scored three runs in the sixth inning and one in the seventh en route to the 4-2 final.
Plattsburgh State scored the game's first two runs in the first two innings, on RBI-singles from senior Brianna Clarke and freshman Nicole Chiarello. The Cardinals were able to keep the Engineers at bay until the sixth inning when junior Jena Servidone hit a game-tying, two-run double in the top of the inning. Taylor Ten Eyck brought home the eventual winning run with a single up the middle.
RPI's Tori Hunt added an insurance run in the seventh, singling to right, which allowed freshman Morgan Kollmeier to cross the plate.
Stephanie Caudle earned her first collegiate victory, allowing two runs on seven hits in 7.0 innings for the Engineers. She struck out four and walked five. Cardinals' sophomore Morgan Anderson was tagged with the loss, giving up four runs in 7.0 innings. She had one strikeout and no walks.
Game Two: Plattsburgh State 2, RPI 1 Game two saw Plattsburgh State jump out to another early lead, plating a single run in the bottom of the first inning. Clarke rolled a hit through the left side of the infield, which brought home junior Brittany Marshall.
The Cardinals made it 2-0 in the fourth, when senior Samantha Capobianco was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
RPI then loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the fifth, before Servidone was plunked in the arm to bring home a run. Plattsburgh State starter Kristen Fisher was able to avoid further trouble by inducing a flyout off the bat of Ten Eyck to end the inning.
Anderson came on the pitch the final two innings for the Cardinals, picking up her first save of the season. RPI sophomore starter Victoria Hepworth was hit with the loss, allowing two runs on five hits in 5.0 innings.
Marshall scored both runs in the win while also picking up a hit and swiping a base for the Cardinals.
Plattsburgh State returns to conference play Friday with a pair of games against New Paltz. Game times and location will be announced Thursday.
