Box Score 2 BALDWINSVILLE, N.Y. – Brianna Clarke went 4-for-7 with two home runs, six RBIs, four runs scored and a walk to help the Plattsburgh State softball team earn its first State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) sweep of the season. The Cardinals defeated Oswego State, 3-2, in game one, before crushing the Lakers, 18-7, in the second game. The doubleheader was played at Ray Middle School in Baldwinsville.
With the sweep, Plattsburgh State improves to 5-15 overall and 3-5 against SUNYAC teams. Oswego State falls to 4-13 on the year and 1-9 in the league.
Game One – Plattsburgh State 3, Oswego State 2 Morgan Anderson tossed a complete game for the Cardinals, allowing two runs and scattering eight hits to earn her first win of the season.
The Lakers took the lead in the bottom of the first on Alexandra McKay's RBI single before the Cardinals tied it at 1-1 in the top of the third when Kristine Gay's single to center allowed Clarke to cross the plate.
A one-out single by Katie Bredin followed by an RBI triple from Sammie Schroeter allowed Oswego State to regain the lead in the bottom half of the fifth but a little small ball helped Plattsburgh State tie it up again in the top of the sixth. Gay led off the inning with a single to left field before advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt by Kerry McCarty. Samantha Tenney flied out to right, moving Gay to third, before Kayla Rabideau brought Gay around to score with a single to right field.
A lead-off double by Brittany Marshall opened the Cardinals' half of the seventh before a sacrifice bunt by Shelby Heyward put Marshall at third. Clarke drove in Marshall for the go-ahead run with a fly ball to left field to lift the Cardinals to a 3-2 come-from-behind win in game one.
Heyward, Clarke and Rabideau each contributed two hits in the victory, while the Cardinals outhit the Lakers, 10-8. Bredin went 2-for-4 with two runs scored for the Lakers.
Oswego State's Katie Heselden allowed two runs on nine hits in six innings of work. Alexandria Connelly suffered the loss after giving up the winning run in the seventh.
Game Two – Plattsburgh State 18, Oswego State 7 A tight game through the first four innings turned into a slugfest as the two teams combined for 24 runs in the last three innings in an 18-7 win for Plattsburgh State.
Oswego State broke the scoreless tie with a run in the bottom of the third before the Cardinals plated four runs in the top of the fifth and six in the top of the sixth to take a commanding 10-1 lead. The Lakers kept the game going by answering back with three runs in the bottom half of the inning but the floodgates opened in the seventh when Plattsburgh State took advantage of three Lakers' errors to score eight times and put Oswego State away.
Clarke drilled a pair of home runs in game two to finish the game with two hits, five RBIs and three runs scored. Marshall went 3-for-5 with four RBIs and three runs while Nicole Chiarello added three hits and a pair of RBIs.
Bredin, McKay, Schroeter and Noelle White each chipped in two hits for the Lakers.
Sam Moss picked up the win for the Cardinals, surrendering four earned runs on 10 hits to improve to 3-7 on the year. Moss walked two and struck out one.
Alexis Nasca took the loss, allowing eight runs and eight hits through 5.2 innings. Heselden was tagged for 10 runs, four of which were earned, in 1.1 innings of work.
The Cardinals return to action Wednesday in a non-conference doubleheader against RPI. The games were originally scheduled to be played at Cardinal Park but the series has been moved to Doris Robinson Field in Troy, N.Y. with a 3 :30 p.m. start time.
