Errors Hinder Cardinals as Softball Drops Two at Buffalo State

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State softball team gave up a combined eight unearned runs in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) doubleheader at Buffalo State. The Cardinals suffered a 9-1 loss in five innings in game one, before the Bengals rallied in game two to hand Plattsburgh State a 9-8 loss.
 
The Cardinals drop to 3-15 overall and 1-5 against conference opponents. The Bengals improve to 10-8 on the year and 4-2 in the SUNYAC.
 
Game One: Buffalo State 9, Plattsburgh State 1 (5 inn.)
 
Buffalo State's Maddie Coneys handled the Cardinals' offense in game one, allowing one run on five hits, while the Bengals scored nine runs on 12 hits to earn a 9-1 win in five innings in Saturday's first game.
 
Sam Moss was tagged with the loss for Plattsburgh State, allowing five earned runs and issuing one walk in 4.2 innings of work.
 
Stephanie Novo led off the Bengals' half of the first with a double to left field. A hit batter and a walk loaded the bases for Buffalo State before Taylor Swiatek drove in the first run of the game with a single to left center.
 
The Cardinals responded with a lead-off single by Sam Capobianco to open the second inning. Natasha Schultz, who came in as a pinch runner for Capobianco, stole second and came around to score on an RBI single by Kristine Gay to even the score at 1-1.
 
The Bengals scored the go-ahead run in the third after Kate Brownell reached on an error before advancing to third on a single and scoring on Jenna Clarke's sacrifice fly.
 
A Cardinals' throwing error and a stolen base to start the bottom of the fourth put Buffalo State's Carly Knight in scoring position. Knight scored on an RBI single by Shelly Maggard before the Bengals plated three more runs in the inning to take a 6-1 lead at the end of fourth.
 
Buffalo State added three more in the fifth to take the first of two games on the day. Novo went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and a stolen base while Brownell and Maggard each drove in two runs.
 
Capobianco, Gay, Kayla Rabideau, Brittany Marshall and Brianna Clarke accounted for the Cardinals' five hits. Plattsburgh State committed three errors while Buffalo State was charged with two errors.
 
Game Two: Buffalo State 9, Plattsburgh State 8
 
Plattsburgh State let a five-run lead slip away in game two as the Bengals scored six runs in the bottom of the sixth en route to the 9-8 come-from-behind win.
 
The Cardinals grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first inning on Shelby Heyward's RBI single that brought home Nicole Chiarello. After Marshall scored on a Buffalo State fielding error in the top of the third, Heyward kept the offense going with an RBI single to right field, scoring Clarke. Kerry McCarty rounded out the Cardinals' half of the third with an RBI double to right center to bring Gay around to score and give Plattsburgh State a 4-0 lead.
 
Back-to-back errors by the Cardinals in the bottom of the third gave way to the Bengals' first run of the game. Buffalo State added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth to cut the Cardinals' lead to 4-3.
 
It was Plattsburgh State's turn to capitalize on a pair of Buffalo State errors in the top of the sixth as the Cardinals scored four runs, two of which were unearned, to stretch the lead to 8-3.
 
Novo sparked the Bengals' rally in the bottom of the sixth when she stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and one out. Novo doubled to right center to clear the bases and bring Buffalo State within two. A muffed throw by the Cardinals allowed Novo to score before a two-out single by Brownell drove in two runs to give the Bengals a 9-8 lead.
 
Coneys, who pitched 1.2 innings in relief to earn the win, retired the Cardinals in order in the top of the seventh. She allowed two hits and struck out two. Jordan Sarat got the start for the Bengals, giving up two runs on four hits through the first two innings. Sam Tilkins surrendered four earned runs and six hits in 3.1 innings of work.
 
Morgan Anderson tossed a complete game for the Cardinals, allowing five earned runs and eight hits. Anderson walked two and struck out two in the loss.
 
Offensively for the Cardinals, Chiarello went 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Heyward and Clarke combined for five hits and four RBIs . Plattsburgh State finished the day with 12 hits and four errors while Buffalo State had eight hits and three blunders.
 
Plattsburgh State wraps up the weekend with two games against Oswego State on Sunday. The SUNYAC doubleheader is set to begin at 10 a.m. at Ray Middle School in Baldwinsville, N.Y.
