Softball Earns SUNYAC Split at Fredonia State

Brianna Clarke drove in four runs on two hits and scored a pair of runs for the Cardinals in game one.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 FREDONIA, N.Y. – After nearly two weeks since its last game, the Plattsburgh State softball team split a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) doubleheader at Fredonia State Friday afternoon. The Cardinals rallied to take game one, 10-9, before suffering a 2-1 loss in eight innings in game two against the Blue Devils.

Game One: Plattsburgh State 10, Fredonia State 9

A late-inning offensive surge helped lift Plattsburgh State (3-13, 1-3 SUNYAC) in the first game as the Cardinals scored seven runs in the last two innings to pick up their first league win of the season.

Plattsburgh State finished with 13 hits while Fredonia State (4-9, 1-3 SUNYAC) had 18. Brianna Clarke went 2-for-4 at the plate with a home run and four RBIs. Nicole Chiarello was 2-for-3 with two runs scored, two walks and two stolen bases while Kerry McCarty drove in a pair of runs in the Cardinals' victory.

Fredonia State's Alyssa Morgan went 4-for-5 with three runs scored while Jess Lauck was 3-for-4 with four RBIs.

A RBI single by Sam Capobianco in the top of the first gave Plattsburgh State an early lead, but a shaky start by Sam Moss gave Fredonia State (4-9, 1-3 SUNYAC) a 4-1 lead at the end of one. Moss issued three walks early in the inning, leading to the Blue Devils first run, before Erin Mushtare doubled to drive in two runs. Alyssa DiBiase followed later in the inning with a two-out RBI single before Moss was able to retire the side.

Kristine Gay reached on an error and advanced to second to open the Cardinals' half of the fourth inning before a sacrifice bunt by Kayla Rabideau put Gay on third. Chiarello came through with an RBI single to score Gay and cut the deficit to 4-2.

Moss was tagged for four more runs in the bottom of the fourth before handing the ball over to Kristen Fisher.  Moss allowed eight runs on 11 hits with four walks and three strikeouts through 3.1 innings.

The Cardinals began to climb back into the game in the fifth after Gay's sacrifice fly scored Shelby Heyward for Plattsburgh State's third run. The offense gained more momentum in the sixth after a lead-off double by Brittany Marshall set up a two-run home run for Clarke. Samantha Tenney added an RBI double later in the inning to make it an 8-6 game in favor of Fredonia State.

A two-run single by Clarke in the top of the seventh brought the Cardinals even with the Blue Devils before a double by McCarty plated two more runs to give Plattsburgh State a 10-8 lead.

Fredonia State added a run in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI double by Jess Lauck, but the Cardinals were able to hold on for the win.

Fisher earned her first win of the second, giving up just one run and seven hits in 3.2 innings of work. The Cardinals' junior walked two and struck out three in the relief appearance.

Game Two: Fredonia State 2, Plattsburgh State 1 (8 inn.)

After combining for 31 hits in game one, the two teams locked into a pitcher's duel in the latter portion of Friday's doubleheader. Kelsey Gannett stepped in the circle for Fredonia State, allowing one unearned run and five hits in eight innings to earn the complete-game victory. Gannett issued one walk and struck out four.

Morgan Anderson took the ball for the Cardinals, surrendering two runs on six hits while recording three strikeouts through 7.1 innings. Anderson's record drops to 0-3 on the year with the hard-luck loss.

The Blue Devils broke up the scoreless affair in the bottom of the fourth when Cherise Gunnell drilled a solo home run down the left field line to give Fredonia State a 1-0 lead.

Plattsburgh State evened the score in the top of the sixth on an RBI double by McCarty. With one out, Hope VanBrocklin came in as a pinch-runner for Capobianco, who reached on an error. A groundout put the Cardinals' runner in scoring position before McCarty's double brought VanBrocklin around to score the game-tying run.

A lead-off single and a groundout in the Blue Devils' half of the eighth put the winning run at second with one out. Kim Lotucki stepped to the plate and handed Fredonia State the walk-off win with an RBI double.

Chiarello went 2-for-4 in game two while Marshall, Heyward and McCarty all picked up a hit in the loss.

Morgan had two of Fredonia State's six hits in game two. Gunnell, Lotucki, Madeline Medina and Izzy Simon each added a hit for the Blue Devils.

The Cardinals continue a full weekend of league play tomorrow with two games at Buffalo State. The doubleheader is slated for noon.
