Cardinals' First-Round NCAA Tilt Comes Against Another First-Time Tourney Team in Roger Williams

BRUNSWICK, Maine – Bowdoin College will be the site of the first NCAA Division III Women's Basketball Tournament appearance by Plattsburgh State, and the similarities between the Cardinals and their first-round opponent Roger Williams University are anything but few and far between.

Armed with a 22-5 record, State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) regular season and championship tournament titles, the Cardinals will tangle with a 22-6 Hawk squad who finished as the runners-up of the Commonwealth Coast Conference Tournament to earn an at-large bid to the big dance. The first of the two semifinal games at Bowdoin College, Plattsburgh State and Roger Williams will tip-off at 5 p.m. on Friday night.

Tickets will go on sale one hour prior to the game at the door of Morrell Gymnasium on the campus of Bowdoin College. Prices are $6 for general admission and $3 for students, children and senior citizens. Youngsters under the age of two will be admitted free of charge.

Fans that are unable to make the trip to Bowdoin College can follow all the action via live statistical coverage courtesy of the Bowdoin sports information department and via a live video feed by Northeast Sports Network. The links to both services are located below.

PLATTSBURGH STATE (22-5)
All season long, the Cardinals have been led by 2013-14 SUNYAC Player of the Year and senior Kathleen Payne who has broken no fewer than four school record in her final season as a collegian. The Goshen, N.Y., product has poured in an average of 19.7 points per game this season – the second-best mark in the 10-team SUNYAC and the 31st best average among all Division III women's basketball players.

Some of the gaudy numbers the senior has come up with this season include becoming the program's all-time leading scorer on Jan. 25 and securing the number-one spot on the Cardinals' career rebounding charts on Feb. 22. Currently, Payne's point total stands at 1,686 while her rebounding tally sits at 740. Her 533 points scored this season are the most in a single season in Plattsburgh State history, and she is the ninth Cardinal player – male or female – to score at least 500 points in a season.

Thanks to Payne's prolific scoring ways, the Cardinals finished the season as the SUNYAC's top scoring team, pouring in an average of 71.5 points per game. Plattsburgh State, though, is anything but a one-woman show.

Junior point guard Brittany Marshall guides the offensive exploits of Plattsburgh State, and the Malone, N.Y., product was a two-time SUNYAC Player of the Week this season. Her most recent honor came in the SUNYAC Women's Basketball Championship Tournament where she was selected as the most valuable player.

Marshall was tops in the SUNYAC in terms of assists per game (5.8) and needs just one more to break the Plattsburgh State single-season assist record of 157. A talented scorer in her own right, Marshall's points per game average of 12.7 is 10th-best in the SUNYAC and she currently holds the program record for most career three-pointers (140).

A staunch defensive squad as a whole, much of the Cardinals' defensive work is done by senior Brooke Reifinger and junior Misha Green – two of the best stoppers in the conference. Interior duties are handled by sophomore Devona Paul (11 points per game, 83.6-percent free throw shooting) and senior Tequilla Lloyd (3.8 points, 4.4 rebounds per game).

As a team, Plattsburgh State is unmatched in the SUNYAC in terms of blocked shots per game (4.15) and three-point field goal percentage defense (27.2-percent shooting by opponents from long range).

ROGER WILLIAMS UNIVERSITY (22-6)
Down in Rhode Island, Roger Williams University has been – much like the Cardinals – enjoying its best season in the history of women's basketball at the institution. Kaitlyn Bovee earned Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Player of the Year laurels in her final season at the collegiate level, and the high-scoring guard/forward owns a similar body of work to Payne.

Boyee averages 16.4 points per game on 45.2-percent field goal shooting for the Hawks and has also emerged as the team leader in the rebounding department (8.6 per game). When stacked up against other CCC student-athletes, Boyee is almost unmatched in many statistical categories. Her scoring average is third-best in the 10-team conference and her rebounding numbers are the fourth-highest.

Both her field goal percentage and three-point field goal percentage (34.6-percent) rank fourth among her conference peers. As a team, the Hawks possess the most potent offense in the conference, as they average 67.4 points per game. Their points allowed average of 56.1 is the second-best among all CCC squads.

Two other talented guards – Angelica Ariola and Ari Renwick – round out a very high-scoring backcourt for the Hawks. Ariola (12.6) and Renwick (12.1) are virtually the same by the numbers as both shoot a touch above 41-percent from the field.

Shannon Cullen anchors the painted area for Roger Williams with a team-high 64 blocked shots.
