GAME ONE – Wisconsin-Whitewater 7, Plattsburgh State 3 (7 inn.)
A pair of costly Plattsburgh State errors helped Wisconsin-Whitewater rack up four unearned runs to earn the win in their first 2014 action.
The Cardinals got on the board first in the tilt between the SUNYAC and WIAC institutions. Nicole Chiarello began the game with an infield single before Brittany Marshall was hit with an offering by the Warhawks' Bekka Houda.
After a pair of outs, Chirello swiped third base and went on to advance home as Marshall stole second.
UW-Whitewater wrestled the lead away from the Cardinals for good in the bottom of the second when the Warhawks put four runs on the board. Sam Capobianco committed an error early in the inning, and a sacrifice fly, and RBI single and a pair of bases-loaded walks issued by Plattsburgh State starter Sam Moss all wound up going as unearned runs.
Plattsburgh State cut its deficit in half when Kristine Gay drew a bases-loaded walk of her own that scored Natasha Schultz in the top of the third.
It remained a 4-2 game until the Warhawks added an RBI double in the bottom of the fifth before finishing off their scoring with two RBI singles in the home portion of the sixth.
The Cardinals got one back when Brianna Clarke doubled to left field and scored Marshall to make it a 7-3 game.
Moss (2-4) pitched the complete game for Plattsburgh State, allowing seven runs on nine hits and four walks. Houda picked up the win with a complete game effort of her own. The Warhawk fanned eight batters and gave up seven hits and a trio of walks. Clarke (2-for-4) and Gay (1-for-2) each had an RBI.
Six different players collected at least one RBI for the Warhawks.
GAME TWO – Wisconsin-Stout 5, Plattsburgh State 0 (7 inn.)
Kristin Fisher (0-2) matched zeroes with Stout's Tori Workman through four innings, but the Blue Devils were finally able to get to the Plattsburgh, N.Y., product in the top of the fifth inning.
After inducing the first out of the frame, Fisher allowed three consecutive singles to load the bases. What appeared to be a sure out was instead misplayed by the Plattsburgh State right fielder, allowing a pair of Blue Devils to score.
Wisconsin-Stout added two more runs in the frame by way of RBI singles from Workman and Hannah Sweet.
The Blue Devils plated their final run of the contest on a one-out RBI double by Kaitlin Stark in the sixth inning.
Workman (8-5) was almost untouchable as she allowed just seven Plattsburgh State batters to reach the base paths in the seven-inning tilt. Marshall, Kerry McCarty and Natasha Schultz produced the only three hits of the game for the Cardinals.
