Season-High 15 Runs Power Cardinals in Win over Allegheny During Thursday Split

Kayla Rabideau drove in four runs during the Cardinals' 15-6 win on Thursday.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CLERMONT, Fla. – The Plattsburgh State softball team avenged a lopsided loss to Utica in their first game of the day by pounding Allegheny College 15-6 to improve to 2-6 in 2014.

GAME ONE – Utica 8, Plattsburgh State 0 (5 inn.)
Before the Cardinals were able to get their offense firing on all cylinders, it took a slight detour in an 8-0 shutout loss to Utica in the first game of the day.

Plattsburgh State could barely touch Utica starter Erica Colucci who gave up just three hits to the Cardinals through her five complete innings of work.

The Pioneers tagged Cardinals' starter Sam Moss with four early runs with the biggest swing of the game coming from Chelsea Monroe. The senior launched a three-run homerun in the top of the second to make it a 4-0 game.

Utica added another trio of runs in the fifth off of Morgan Anderson. An RBI single, RBI double and RBI groundout closed out the scoring.

Moss (1-2) took the loss for the Cardinals as she worked two innings and gave up four runs on as many hits. Moss walked one and struck out three.

Nicole Chiarello, Samantha Tenney and Courtney Hilligas each registered a hit for the Plattsburgh State.

GAME TWO – Plattsburgh State 15, Allegheny 6 (5 inn.)
The Cardinals broke out the big bats in their second game of the day, striking for more runs in their five-inning victory than in their previous seven game put together.

In order to earn the win, however, Plattsburgh State had to come back from an early 3-1 deficit. Sam Capobianco staked the designated visiting squad to an early 1-0 lead when her RBI single in the first scored Brittany Marshall.

Allegheny responded with a trio of runs during their half of the initial frame. Kristin Fisher gave up an RBI single before surrendering a two-run double to Katrina George before the first three Gator outs were up on the board.

Kayla Rabideau started the Cardinals' comeback by poking an RBI single through the left side of the infield in the second to plate Natasha Schultz. Another pair of runs would cross home due to an error and some heads-up base running by Marshall.

Schultz added to the Plattsburgh State advantage in third when the sophomore came up with her first hit of the season – a one-out double to the gap in left center field to score Kerry McCarty and Kristine Gay.

The Gators, though, battled back to tie things up for the final time by putting up another three-spot in the bottom of the third on a pair of RBI singles and another RBI double. Midway through the inning, Moss replaced Fisher in the circle and registered a pair of strikeouts to send the Gators back to the field.

A six-run fourth inning – lengthened by a pair of Allegheny errors - put the Cardinals ahead for good. Capobianco, McCarty, Rabideau and Marshall each picked up an RBI in the frame and a bases-loaded error brought home the other two Plattsburgh State runs.

The Cardinals used a two-run single by Rabideau to help finish off the Gators in the top of the fifth.

Moss (2-2) brought her record back to .500 by pitching three innings of relief and striking out three. She gave up just one run.

Capobianco had a game-high four hits with two RBI and a pair of runs scored to lead the way for the Cardinals. Rabideau finished with three runs scored, four RBI and a 2-for-2 day at the dish. Schultz (1-3, two RBI) and Marshall (2-4, three runs, one RBI) also enjoyed well-rounded outings.

Allison Cabo was on the losing end of the decision for the Gators. George finished with three RBI to lead the Allegheny offense.

A Friday filled with WIAC opposition is next on the Cardinals' docket. Plattsburgh State will take on Wis.-Whitewater at 9 a.m. before wrapping up their two-game set with Wis.-Stout at 11 a.m.
