Moss Fires One-Hitter, Helps Cardinals Earn 2-1 Decision Against Eastern Conn. on 1-1 Day

Samantha Moss and the Cardinals each picked up their first win of 2014 on Wednesday morning.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CLERMONT, Fla. – Plattsburgh State sophomore Sam Moss fired seven innings of one-hit softball to lift the Cardinals to their first triumph of 2014 by a score of 2-1 over Eastern Connecticut State on Wednesday morning. The Cardinals fell 4-0 to Fontbonne University during their second tilt of the day.

GAME ONE – Plattsburgh State 2, Eastern Connecticut State 1 (7 inn.)
RBI singles in the home portion of the fourth inning by sophomores Kerry McCarty and Kristine Gay pushed across the lone Plattsburgh State runs in the bout, but they proved to be more than sufficient with Moss in the circle.

Moss retired eight of the first 11 batters she faced, and didn't allow her first hit of the game until the seventh inning. With two outs in the frame, Shannon Martin poked a double into the outfield. Samantha Bardon – who was inserted as a pinch runner for Martin - would come around to score the sole Warrior run minutes later when Jen Tamandzija reached on the only Plattsburgh State error of the game.

McCarty and Brittany Marshall scored the two Plattsburgh State runs and each of the Cardinals' seven hits came off the bat of a different player. Moss (1-2) struck out two and issued just one base on balls during the win.

Erin Miller took the loss for the Warrior, giving up seven hits and striking out three.

GAME TWO – Fontbonne University 4, Plattsburgh State 0 (7 inn.)
All of the runs in the Cardinals' second seven-inning game of the morning occurred in the home half of the fifth inning.
Sophomore Kristin Fisher got the ball to start, and worked her way through three innings. The Plattsburgh, N.Y., product allowed four hits and struck out one Griffin batter.

Matching Fisher pitch-for-pitch, though, was Fontbonne's Kourtney Von Behren who lasted five innings. She struck out three, walked one and gave up the Cardinals' only four hits of the game.

Coming on in relief for Fisher, Morgan Anderson sat down the first five Fontbonne batters she faced before one of the two Plattsburgh State fielding errors allowed Caitlin Nappier to reach first base. After the nine hitter stole second base, the top of the Griffin's order unleashed four consecutive RBI hits to take a 4-0 lead.

Moss came on to pitch for Anderson, and registered the final out of the frame with a flyout to center field.

Plattsburgh State mustered just one base runner against Fontbonne reliever Lindsay Schaefer, and that came by way of an error.

The one-through-four hitters for Fontbonne went 7-for-12 with three runs scored and four RBI. The remainder of the lineup was held to a 1-for-13 morning.

Brianna Clarke, Shelby Heyward, Kayla Rabideau and Samantha Tenney registered one hit each for Plattsburgh State. Anderson (0-2) took the loss with a line of 1.2 innings pitched, two strikeouts, four hits and four runs allowed.

Plattsburgh State will be back at it bright and early on Thursday with another pair of games. At 8 a.m., the Cardinals will tangle with Utica before facing off with Allegheny College at 10 a.m.
