WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. - One night removed from crossing the path of an Elizabethtown squad that slowed down the pace and ran a methodical post-oriented offense, the Plattsburgh State men's basketball team took the floor against a youth-laden Lycoming College squad who tried to beat the Cardinals at their own game - a high-tempo, up-and-down the court style of basketball.

It didn't work out all that well for Lycoming. 

Jordan Moody's 22-point performance off the bench earned the senior the title of Dutch Burch Tip-Off Tournament MVP while the Cardinals' reserves combined for 50 points as Plattsburgh State ran away with a 78-64 triumph over host institution Lycoming College on Sunday afternoon.

Other Plattsburgh State stars included the junior tandem of Edward Correa and Kyle Richardson who each conjured up double-double performances. Correa was the lone starter to reach double figures in scoring, netting 10 to go along with a game-high 11 rebounds. Richardson, meanwhile, was another highly-effective performance off the Cardinals' bench as he accumulated 13 markers and 10 of Plattsburgh State's 45 boards. Mike Mitchell earned a spot on the All-Tournament Team, too, with a nine-point, eight-assist outing. 

Plattsburgh State becomes just the sixth team other than Lycoming to win the Dutch Burch Tip-Off Tournament since it began in 1998.

Upon coming down with the opening tip, the Cardinals didn't squander a lot of clock before striking first. A senior point guard, Mitchell needed just 11 seconds to record the first of his eight assists when the Milford, N.H., product located a wide-open Correa outside of the three-point line.

After final-year post player Reggie Williams eluded the Warriors' defense for a two-handed throwdown, Correa drilled another long ball to cap the Cardinals' 8-2 in the first 1:55 of the non-conference showdown.

Showing off his quick hands, Williams came up with a steal and handled the rock throughout a three-on-one fast break. Rumbling down the court, the Yonkers, N.Y., product elected to finish the break himself, stepping by a Lycoming defender and laying the ball through the net. Another layup from the big man upped the Plattsburgh State edge to 15-6 with 15:05 remaining in the first half.

Lycoming finally began to put up a fight when Nykolas King struck for an old-fashioned three-point play. Patrick Dougher capped the 5-0 Warrior run which shrunk the Cardinals' lead to 15-11 before Richardson stepped into the offensive limelight.

The former NCAA Division II competitor bumped and banged with Lycoming's bruising interior men, snaring an offensive rebound and converting a layup before stepping to the charity stripe and finishing the three-point play with a swish from that distance.

Richardson's soft touch from downtown manifested itself for the Cardinals' next batch of points, and after a hard-driving layup from Moody and a pair of free throw hits from Xavier Thomas, Plattsburgh State had a 25-15 lead.

Simply put, Moody was far too much for the Warriors to handle. A smooth mid-range hit by the Peekskill, N.Y., product followed by his first downtown splashdown put the Cardinals up 32-17. Lycoming embarked on a 7-0 run to pull within seven, 32-25, with 7:35 to go in the first, but Moody pumped in another five points to push the Platsburgh State lead back to double-digits.

By the time the first half was in the books, the Cardinals had led by as many as 19 points and took a 47-30 lead into the break. Upon exiting their locker room, Plattsburgh State only had to weather one final push from the Warriors before cruising to victory.

Through the first 4:33 of the deciding frame, the Warriors went on a 9-2 run, trimming the Plattsburgh State lead to 10 before the Cardinals regained their composure on the offensive end. Mitchell dialed up and connected on a triple of his own before dishing the rock to Moody who hit another long ball which pushed the Plattsburgh State lead back to 14 with 14:18 to go.

For the rest of the game, Plattsburgh State wouldn't see its lead dip below 12 points, but there were a couple more highlights to be had for the visitors.

With 10:17 remaining, Mitchell hustled down a defensive rebound and sent a crisp outlet pass to Richardson who charged ahead leading an odd-man rush. Surprisingly, none of the Warriors elected to slow down the Baldwin, N.Y., product who took to the sky and hammered down a powerful one-handed jam.

Thomas, a regular human highlight reel in his own right, added one more rim-rocker for the Cardinals before all was said and done. With 6:56 remaining and the shot clock quickly heading toward zero, Thomas rose up high and brought down a poster-worthy dunk on directly on King. 

For the game, Plattsburgh State hit 41.7 percent (28-of-67) of its field goals while limiting the Warriors to a 19-of-61 clip (31.1 percent). Chris Wallace led the way for Lycoming with a team-best 14 points. The Warriors took very good care of the ball, committing just nine turnovers during the 40-minute bout. 

Danbury, Conn., is the site of the Cardinals' next tilt as Plattsburgh State is scheduled to do battle with Western Connecticut State on Friday night. The non-conference game is scheduled to tip-off at 7 p.m.
