Box Score CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State men's soccer team experienced the full gamut of emotions late in the second half of Friday night's tilt, but the evening ended on a woeful note the Cardinals as Sean Streb netted his second goal of the season with 13 seconds remaining in regulation, sending Plattsburgh State to a 1-0 loss against SUNY Cortland on Jets Field.
With the tough-luck setback, Plattsburgh State drops to 5-5-1 and 0-2 in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play. On the other side of the coin, the Red Dragons improve to 7-2-1 and 2-0-1 in league bouts.
In an emotional game which featured a total of eight combined yellow and red cards, there weren't too many high-quality offensive opportunities in a scoreless first frame. SUNY Cortland's Darren McCormick owned the best scoring chance of the half when his shot in the first minute of the game was scooped up by Mitchell Jordon (5-5-1).
It appeared as though the Cardinals conjured up their first SUNYAC goal of the season in the 77
th minute. Junior midfielder Fabian Chaparro snaked his way through the Red Dragon's back line and blasted a shot past Cortland keeper Tim Beauvais at 76:49.
The Cardinals' elation turned to misery shortly thereafter, though, as the officials conferred and decided that the goal was to be waved off as there was a foul being called on the play. Enraged, Ethan Votraw drew his second yellow card of the contest and was forced to hit the showers which in turn let the Cardinals do battle with just 10 men for the rest of the way.
Jordan continued to keep the Red Dragons at bay, denying Daniel Friend's scoring attempt in the 83
rd minute. The Bolton Landing, N.Y., product got some help, too, as another Plattsburgh State player deflected Friend's second attempt over the Cardinals' crossbar.
SUNY Cortland scored the game winner at 89:47 when Nick Tata sent a sharp cross into the 18-yard box which found the head of Streb. The junior took to the sky and sent his header past Jordon.
Jordon tallied a season-best six saves in the loss while Ryan Miller recorded the Cardinals' only shot on goal of the match. Chaparro, Alexis Archilla and Ian Spear each accounted for two of the Cardinals 10 shots. SUNY Cortland won the corner kick battle, taking seven to Plattsburgh State's three.
Still searching for their first conference win of the season, the Cardinals head to Oswego State for a 1 p.m., matchup with the Lakers on Saturday.
