PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Senior midfielder Emily LaLone conjured up her first goal of the 2013 campaign, but the Plattsburgh State women's soccer team surrendered a pair of second-half goals to St. Lawrence as they fell to the Saints by a 2-1 score in the opening game of the Cardinal Classic at the Field House Complex on Friday afternoon.

Plattsburgh State slips to 2-1 while the Saints (3-0) have yet to be on the losing end of things in 2013.

Eager to push the tempo, St. Lawrence came out with its collective mind set on scoring quickly. In the first 3:49 of the match, the Saints attempted three corner kicks, the second of which generated the first shot of the game by Emily DePoy who sent a bouncing ball toward the mitts of Plattsburgh State keeper Charisse Abellard.

After sending its first three shot attempts of the day either wide or high, freshman Diana DiCocco helped the Cardinals grab their only lead of the match. With 43:10 gone in the opening frame, the Schenectady, N.Y., product went on an attacking run toward the St. Lawrence goal, only to be hauled down by an enemy defender just outside the 18-yard box.

LaLone took over from there, netting her first goal of 2013 by sending her free kick attempt into the top left corner of the St. Lawrence net and past the outstretched fingertips of Saints keeper Andrea Strauss.

Coming out of the halftime break, it took the Saints a little over 10 minutes to tally the equalizing goal. Nyssa LaClair's initial scoring attempt was turned aside by Abellard, but Erika Gobielle was there to tap in the rebound from three yards out at the 55:34 mark.

Another strong offensive push by the Saints yielded the deciding score fewer than three minutes later. This time, it was Julia Friesen who corralled a loose ball at the goal mouth and sent it past the diving Abellard at 58:20.

Plattsburgh State nearly came up with another score after Taylor Florio got things going with a corner kick at 81:17. Seniors Lauren Gonyea and LaLone each fired shots through a mass of bodies, but neither one got past Strauss.

Freshman Heather Marko tested Strauss for the final time with a hard shot at the 89:06 mark.

Abellard (1-2), made four saves while Strauss accumulated six – all of which came in the second half. The Saints outshot the Cardinals 13-10 and took seven corner kicks to the Cardinals' two.

Plattsburgh State will try to attain its first home victory of the 2013 campaign on Saturday when the Cardinals take on Bard College in the fourth and final game of the 2013 Cardinal Classic. The non-conference tilt is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m.

GAME TWO: Oswego State 2, Bard 0

In the second game of the Cardinal Classic, Oswego State used a pair of first half goals to ease by Bard 2-0.

After feeling each other out in the early stages of the game, the Lakers struck for the first time when Nikki Liadka sent a hard shot past Bard netminder Kelsey O'Brien with 25:27 gone in the game. The goal was Liadka's sixth of the season.

In the 39th minute, Oswego State junior Bri Dolan found herself on the receiving end of the pass from freshman Dana Pitts. Dolan, who had snuck past the Raptors' back line, chipped a shot over the head of O'Brien who came out to challenge the junior at the 38:11 mark.

Bard, though, was not without its chance as Gina Lewis took the first shot of the game, testing Oswego State keeper Alyssa Glasshagel in the opening minutes of the tilt.

Bella Wilcher sent a pair of shots on net for the Raptors.

Oswego State and St. Lawrence will square off at 1 p.m., on Saturday with the Cardinal Classic Championship on the line.
