Box Score POTSDAM, N.Y. – It didn't take Plattsburgh State senior Lauren Gonyea long to benefit from her change of soccer scenery.
Playing up on the front line instead of her usual posting among the defenders, the Plattsburgh, N.Y., product netted her second goal of the season just three minutes into the Cardinals' SUNYAC opener at the Turf Field to lead Plattsburgh State past SUNY Potsdam 1-0.Â
With its second win in as many games, the Cardinals improve to 3-5-1 and 1-0 in the 10-team SUNYAC while the Bears slip to 3-5-1 and 0-1 in league matches. Plattsburgh State upped its all-time record against the Bears to 26-0-1.
Although Gonyea's tally was the lone marker in the 90-minute league tilt, the game was replete with scoring opportunities for the road squad. Plattsburgh State outshot the host Bears 21-4 and owned an 8-1 advantage in corner kicks over its North Country nemesis.
As a matter of fact, Gonyea's second goal of the season came on the first shot of the game. Freshman Diana DiCocco – who netted two goals of her own last Tuesday – send a crisp pass to her older teammate at the 3:01 mark before Gonyea ripped a shot that found the far corner of the Bears' net.
SUNY Potsdam keeper Michaela Cole (2-2-1) almost made the save, but the ball deflected off of her hands.
Applying pressure throughout the match, Plattsburgh State never slowed its attack on the Bears' net. Cole was forced to make seven saves in the second 45-minute frame, and the Cardinals back line held the home team without a shot until Alexis Beach sent one wide with 53:53 gone in the match.
In the Plattsburgh State net, junior Kristy Kirkpatrick (2-1-0) was tested by just two SUNY Potsdam shots. The Irondequiot, N.Y., native stopped each potential game-tying shot including one by Hailey Hollenbeck at the 88:51 mark of the game.
Relinquishing the netminder duties to Kirkpatrick, junior Charisse Abellard took up residence in Plattsburgh State's defensive backfield and led the Cardinals with five shots. The Plattsburgh, N.Y., product accounted for two of the eight shots on goal for the Cardinals. Freshman Vicky Scott and Kylie Wallace each sent a pair of shots at Cole as well.
Next week, the Cardinals will embark on another SUNYAC road swing as they seek to keep their 2013 league record untarnished. A Friday afternoon matchup at Oswego State is the next test for Plattsburgh State. The game is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
